Minutemen heroes preventing drafted cowards from fleeing to Canada
Edited on Thu Apr-14-05 11:53 AM by SemiCharmedQuark
Do you think right wingers wouldn't do that? How would you like it if they said "well, we're just going to call the police if we see someone breaking the law" but armed themselves to the teeth. They're not doing anything illegal.

I would bet money most DUers in here would be screaming "fascist" and be seriously pissed off and terrified that extremists, who already had a problem with the people they were supposed to be watching for (libruls), were allowed to carry guns while watching for said illegal activity. Especially if you knew that the government had a lower premium on the lives of liberals. You can't tell me that people wouldn't be screaming bloody murder if there were extremists with guns waiting for their kids.

1. How does one tell the difference between "drafted coward fleeing to
Canada" and people going to Canada on vacation?

2. How does one tell the difference between "illegal alien fleeing to
America" and people going on vacation?

3. Unless Canada prohibits draftees from entering their country,
anyone can just enter through the proper channels.

6. To stay, draftees must prove they face persecution (not prosecution)
Edited on Thu Apr-14-05 12:11 PM by SemiCharmedQuark
Just last month, Canada refused to allow deserters that had fled to Canada to remain. So, they will go back to the US and be prosecuted like hell in Bush's America. 55000 Americans fled to Canada to avoid Vietnam and Canada wasn't too happy about it. I highly doubt they will let that happen again.

9. Reminds me - I wonder how many "draft dodgers" Carter gave amnesty to
have converted to "Repukism"

5. Mainly
Because people going on vacation use several modes of transportation,
and walking through the Arizona desert, or climbing over a fence might be a small indication that it's an illegal entry.

Just a thought.

8. Many illegals enter first legally and then overstay their visas.
And Canada is not patrolled at every edge of the border anymore than Mexico is.

14. Or how
do they know they're not moving to Canada? Who made the Minutemen guards of the boarder? I don't remember seeing that memo from Bush and company.

4. It seems the Americans escaping to Canada are the ones who
want to marry their partners. Also when they go on vacation.

Seems the Americans who are escaping to Canada are the ones who want to "LIVE THEIR LIVES with quality and no fear of persecution".

11. You all, IMHO, are treading on very dangerous ground. The laws have been
changed for anyone wanting to avoid service in the military by fleeing to Canada. Yes, there is a network up "there" to help those that do so. Do not denigrate the men and women who do so. They all need support.

IMHO, again, they who do so, do leave with the best of intentions and heartfelt grief.

I could be wrong, I don't think so.

12. You miss the point entirely.
Edited on Thu Apr-14-05 12:24 PM by SemiCharmedQuark
THe fact that they leave with the best intentions, because they believe it is the right thing to do, and because they just want to live a life with basic rights is exactly the point. So do MExicans fleeing to this country. So why is it ok to wave guns in the faces of Mexicans but not Americans when both groups are fleeing for the same reasons, and both do it against the law.

The people that go to Canada are no more cowards than the Mexicans are criminals trying to take advantage of the system.

13. Because it's too cold to hang around the Canadian border waiting for them
Along the Mexican border, there is a nice dry heat.

You can sit in your lawn chair with a 6-pack and just wait for them.

In Canada, you'd have to huddle in an igloo and shiver until you spotted a fuel-efficient foreign car coming.
