Need some info about the Metro in DC - taking a trip east next
week, won't have a car. Will be staying out near Quantico and have some time to kill. Does the Metro go that far out? Will I be able to catch a ride on the Metro and hit downtown DC from there? Checked the Metro maps but couldn't tell.

On a side note - anybody know of any interesting things happening in DC from Tuesday thru Saturday? Protests? Hearings? Just might get the chance to show up and be heard.

Not that far out.

But any Metro train can get you downtown.

3. No on Metro, but there is commuter rail
but only during rush hour. Try http://www.vre.org/

4. The AMTRAK stops right at the station in QUANTICO...
and goes to the stop in ALEXANDRIA right opposite the Masons Memorial. The METRO is across the street.

The train used to go to DC from Quantico in the morning and back in late afternoon. I don't know about evenings.

Try the National Gallery before the Theocons start painting bras, panties and jockey shorts on the nudes.

5. Metro doesn't, but VRE does
Virginia Railway Express

At least during weekdays. However, because you need to go through the Marine Corps base to get to the Quantico station (http://www.vre.org/service/quant.htm), make sure you've got ID with you or use one of the stations just to the north or to the south.

Using VRE, you've got a couple options to get to DC: you can ride it all the way to Union Station, or you can stop at one of the earlier stops and hop on Metro: the stations at Alexandria, Franconia Springfield, Crystal City, and L'Enfant are adjacent more or less to Metrorail stations.

Good luck!

but you can take the Amtrak to Union Station - however, its not a quick ride into town from way out there. also, you'll need a car to get to the Quantico Station, unless you're staying on the base, so you might as well just drive into No. Virginia and get the metro there.
