This is something I've wondered about for quite a while now.
We learned right after 9/11 that there were undoubtedly more terrorist sleeper cells in the US. Presumably, if they were here, they didn't just pack their bags and fly home in frustration (as in, "Drats, they're on to us!").
We know how porous our borders are, particularly our southern border, and how very easy it is to obtain falsified credentials such as driver's licenses and so forth once inside the country (if you have the cash; terrorists are notoriously well-funded).
We have a good sense of just how sketchy Homeland Security is on the state and local level: it's mostly underfunded. Our ports are pretty much wide open, and water systems, power plants and the like aren't well-protected if at all.
And yet for all these security holes and oversights, since 9/11, America hasn't suffered ONE terrorist attack...not so much as a car bombing. And let's face it, blowing things up with great effect isn't rocket science. A mall, a refinery, a school, a nuclear reactor...These are soft targets here. An attack on any one of these things by al Qaeda would alarm us all, regardless of how many or few lives were lost. The renewed fear would certainly have a bad effect on our economy (part of al Qaeda's alleged tactics in "crushing the US").
Now let's take a look at Israel. They have manned checkpoints, tight borders, a security fence going up, and a military all but devoted to crushing -- er, controlling the Palestinians...Never mind Israel is about the size of NJ, making it relatively easy to secure compared to the US. And still suicide-bombers get through and kill people.
We're newbies at defending ourselves against these kinds of subversive attacks. Israel has been at it for over 50 years and still can't stop them.
So...is the fact that we haven't been attacked in 3 1/2 years "beginner's luck"? Or are you thinking what I'm thinking, Pinky?
