More quakes, and a volcano erupts in Sumatra.
REUTERS< TUESDAY, APRIL 12, 2005 11:55:32 PM >

PADANG: A volcano on Indonesia's Sumatra island erupted on Tuesday, sending hot ash high into the air and forcing the evacuation of hundreds of villagers, officials said.

The eruption was accompanied by a string of moderate earthquakes that rattled towns in Sumatra, which is still recovering from a massive December 26 quake and tsunami that killed nearly 130,000 people.

Scientists have warned of increased seismic activity in Indonesia following the magnitude 9 quake in December as the plates that make up the earth's crust adjust.

Officials said hot ash and thick smoke spewed out of Mt Talang, which lies near the west coast city of Padang, 938 km northwest of Jakarta, near the epicentre of four moderate quakes on Tuesday. An official in the nearby town of Solok said hundreds of villagers living on the slopes of the 2,690 metre volcano had been evacuated so far.

I've been wondering if all this siesmic activity is leading up to the mother of all eruptions on Mt.Toba.:scared:

1. getting tired of the quakes
Wish there was something to be done. I hope these smaller quakes are just letting off steam and prevent anything bigger from happening.

even if it means rounding up every birdwatcher in the country.

2. Holy volcanic eruption, Batman!
That Mt. Toba seems to be a modern day Krakatoa waiting to happen.

8. Actually, I think it would be much, much worse than Krakatoa.
It would even be worse than Yellowstone. If Toba blows, the entire planet is in trouble. :scared:

7. Padang just had a 6.7 quake on Sunday!
It's darn hard to find any current reports on the Lake Toba supervolcano, heard a blip mentioned about it on national news last month, but found nothing written on the internet to follow-up what they said. That report was basically saying that all of this recent tectonic plate shifting & seismic activity seemed to be bringing Toba to life, which could potentially be disastrous to all of us, not just Sumatra.
