Question on republicans
Hi all. I know the republican party is most well known for being the party of Lincoln and all that. This past weekend my parents, brother and I went to visit my grandparents to celebrate my grandfather's birthday. On Friday evening my dad, me and my grandfather were sitting around in their den just talking while we were waiting for my mom and grandmother to come back with dinner and were talking about various things. Main thing we talked about was the Pope, SS and Terri Schavio. I told my dad and grandfather how the republicans have been trying to destroy SS for years and my grandfather talked about his memories of being around in FDR's time and whenever he was talking about FDR he had that sparkle in his eyes so I think he really liked FDR (he's a registered republican who voted Kerry this time around). One thing I was thinking about earlier is have the republicans ever made a social program that was successful?

1. Yes. Corporate Welfare.
My Gramps (god rest his soul), also lived through the depression, and he was a dyed in the wool Democrat. Got the same twinkle in his eye you are describing when talking about FDR, and thought LBJ walked on water.

2. Teddy Roosevelt
passed the Pure Food and Drug Act, among other great achievements. Nixon pushed Head Start, expanded Food Stamps and, bless him, School Lunches.

5. That's right
Teddy was involved in the enviornment a good bit wasn't he? Isn't that why they named the teddy bear after him? My grandfather was telling how he remembered FDR traveling around the country in a convertable and how it's down in Alabama or something like that.

1938 Ford convertible that he designed a special steering mechanism so he could drive it himself.

Totally digging on FDR this week - tomorrow is the 60th anniversary of his death.

9. Oh yes, the old LaSalles I used to hear stories about those cars
...from my brother-in-law. Here is a link to a site with some great photos of old LaSalles and other classic automobiles:

7. It's funny you mention FDR
I was just at the Little White House in Warm Springs last week and was struck by just how relevant the things that FDR put into place are today. His words, actions and deeds are things that need to be studied and "recycled" today to appeal to those who think they're Republicans. They are not. They've been fooled into thinking they are with rhetoric. FDR was a rich politican from New York, but he appealed to even the most lowly, common man in podunk rural Georgia with a true populist message.
