South Korea Transforming Alliance With U.S. to Play Neutral Role in Northeast Asia

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) - The alliance that has kept North Korea at bay for more than 50 years is being transformed as a newly confident South Korea seeks to come out from under the U.S. shadow and play a neutral role in the region where it straddles the fault lines of conflict.

But President Roh Moo-hyun's so-called "balancer" doctrine is raising worries at home that South Korea could be putting its security on the line as it faces a potentially nuclear-armed North Korea, and could lose the support of Washington, its key security guarantor.

South Korea's main opposition leader on Friday blasted the new policy that Roh introduced in a speech last month.

"Breaking away from the Korea-U.S. alliance and diplomatically isolating ourselves will be no help to our national interests," Park Geun-hye, chairwoman of the Grand National Party, said in parliament.

1. FYI
Do you all realize that the U.S. has been in Korea for my entire life. No wonder they want us to leave. I just turned 52.

2. Yep. The US has occupied South Korea for over 50 years
This is a very big deal here. Who will be next to say enough of this US occupation stuff? Germany? Italy? Japan? This is going to get interesting I think.

home of GITMO, if I was Fidel, I would be hopping made, the whole reason for that was, if the terrorist attacked GITMO, no real estate

4. Castro chose to honor the lease
If he wants to get mad, his only legitimate target is himself.

on their soil, sure he signed the lease but if he wanted to bring the matter before the UN, it would be a major embarrassment to the U.S.

7. The S Koreans ditched the dollar too. I'm not surprised.
More power to them, unless they have oil. And we're already neatly in the middle of their country.

8. It's clear that Bush has reduced our influence worldwide.
By ruining our economy and acting unilaterally, Bush has destroyed much of our influence around the globe. Bush's massive debt has given our creditors (Japan, China, South Korea) much more control of our economy. Bush's war has destroyed any moral authority we enjoyed in the past and shown our inability to establish control of the Middle East. Sad days for America.
