Sometimes I loathe DU.
There is so much hatred here! Anger, confronting the administration for its policies, working for change, attempting to oust the most destructive MCs -- all of this I understand.

But hatred? Why?! And don't give me "tit-for-tat" bullshit. An eye for an eye leaves the whole world blind.

28. I've been attacked by freepers here
first they start out by sounding almost reasonable, How do you know that the election was a fraud, so I reply with facts, before I know what's happening they're advocating violent methods to remove the
remaining Dems from office, so what do I do, I go straight to the DNC donate with the DU link so DU gets credit, and then I go back on, and announce on that thread, that I applaud all DU'ers but that no matter how much the freepers bait me, not only will I remain a loyal Dem but I will donate to the Dems.
You should see the fireworks then!

Thanks for the idea.

I'm tired of not only the pure hatred that is often projected at our opponents but also the hatred we seem to be turning inward. Just this morning, there was yet another, "I'm done with Bill Clinton" thread. Quite frankly, I know of no politician that is seemingly supported by the CW at DU.

We need to be a constructive influence here at DU, but lately we seem to be all about being destructive.

92. I think they suffer from an overload
I respect Clinton and think that he did a great job as president but I must admit that seeing Clinton constantly with GHB and GWB is pushing my buttons as well. Yes, I agree that we do have to work
together but I have noticed divisive posts ever since GWB started
to tank in the polls. Just hang on for a bumpy ride. Hold on to facts, if you find yourself being browbeaten, leave the post and come back the next day. One nice thing about this place is if you are honestly trying to fight the good fight, you will find other foot solders with you.

97. don't worry
The country is waking out of the hypnotic spell, even conservative
republicans are quick to distance themselves from George W. Bush, America is on the move and the bulk of the Republicans are flipping out big time. They want to get rid of him as much as we do and all those who have pushed this country to the brink with their non-reality based thinking. Non-reality based thinking to the average
fiscally conservative moderate republican is like kryptonite to superman.

That way it doesn't seem like you are attacking the entire community.

You can imagine when someone sees this thread topic, it's like baiting them to do more of what you are trying to denounce.

You shouldn't be too surprised if the results are less than what you desired.

And no, this wasn't bait. I could've posted this in the lounge, but I wanted it seen in GD, which is where I see most of it. It's hard enough to lurk in this forum, let alone post.

Here's just one, the one that tipped me over the edge. Re Bob Dole: "a nasty, partisan shithead." In a thread about a life-threatening accident the guy just had.

Take a look at all the nastiness thrown around since the pope's death. Can you honestly tell me you don't see hatred here?

At least one other person has trouble w/ this hatred, too. http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=104&topic_id=3457963&mesg_id=3457995

different. I prefer to concentrate all my emotions, especially anger, on the facists who are ruining our country. I have none left over for fellow DUers. The example you give about Bob Dole is unfortunate, but hardly representative of DU. In your place, I would have responded to that poster inividually, or put him on ignore. You are greatly exaggerating the importance and the frequency of the "hatred" at DU. Why not concentrate on defeating the enemy?

7. Some of what you're seeing
is Democrats being Democrats. That's nothing new. Dems have open disagreements all the time about many things. That's one reason why it's sometimes difficult for the party to present a unified front come election time unlike the lock-step party on the other side. Another reason for the anger here is the paid disruptor's on the board.

What it is we are talking about? Because to use terms like "hate" and then just throw them around as accusations does not give me enough information. I cannot agree that as a whole, the entire composition of the DU membership is actively promoting "hate" as an agenda. So let us please define things that we are talking about.

82. On that I agree, but
That is not the impression I got from the initial post. I agree that we should do constructive things. Example: Paper Chase was something I pushed as much as I could. I also think we need a place to vent, scream, and speculate so as to keep our sanity in a world dissolving into chaos around us. I do not think this is an argument of "either/or" when both are very much needed.

As for the original post, my impression is that the poster took offense at people's frustrations and used a strong term like "hate" to describe a collection of very different and unique people without providing a clue as to what that should imply or does imply. I agree on action, however. If only someone would listen, which is a whole other point.

91. Misinformed people say stupid things...
Yet I would not classify DU as "haters." True, there are some people I hate, which actually upsets me because I don't like that side of myself. Namely, Ann Coulter brings out the worst in me. That said, people who are misinformed simply need to be corrected, as you did so. Looks like the thread did not get as much discussion and this one even.

I still don't see "hate" there only frustration and desperation. You are talking about a subject that was "spun" to exploit a very sensitive event in our history. Many people are still very upset over what the Swift Boat Vets did to Kerry. I do not justify their statements, but I can see their anger. Again, this does not address on how "DU" in its collective postings is "hate." Sorry, I need a better example. I know that is a sad and surely offense example, but I do not see the hate there. I simply see people who are angry and who are probably angry at Dole for not standing up with Kerry, much like McCain did not. It was all around a very sad state of events and people need to vent. If not here, then where can they go?

Now that's calling the kettle black.

Besides, singing Kumbaya hasn't been working lately.

Liberals are so uncomfortable with anger. Properly focused, it can do wonders.

Look at what DUers did with the election fraud in OH.

I think DU would be useless if liberals didn't feel angry at the state of the nation.

Anger can be a very healthy stage when a person or group is victimized--a sign of willpower and commitment to positive changes. This kind of anger is sane, healthy, and appropriate.

Personal attacks are unacceptable - healthy debate - go for it with vigor! (And have fun.)

One of the by-products, welcome or not, when I (infrequently) start a thread that stirs the pot like this, is that someone will come along who makes me re-think what I have said. And if not re-think it, gives me reason just to calm down and take a deep breath and lighten up.

Life sucks. Anger and bitterness are righteous. Hatred, while very hard to understand, is inevitable. Thanks, seabeyond.

When he went on the news and denigrated Kerry's service and gave the swift-boat-liars legitimacy. I would never call him a Shi*head. But I am ANGRY at him as he has shown his true colors when he decided to follow the neo-con agenda rather than the truth.

So...mah yourself.

Exatly what I'm saying. One can be angry without hating.

Look, folks, I judge. I realize it. I'm sorry. What can I say but that I'm not perfect. I wish no one hated. The world would be a better place. I believe that what motivates most neocons -- and certainly Bush and his cronies -- is hatred, pure hatred of the poor and those who don't suck up to them.

I think that what motivates them is greed and selfishness. Every disgusting thing they do is to enrich themselves at the expense of everyone else. I don't think they have any feeling towards those that they see as inferior. They see them as objects to be made use of.

99. Agreed
The neocons at the top don't "hate" the poor -- it takes a lot of focus and energy to work up to a good hate. The upper-tier neocons don't put that much effort into it. Their legislative methods of trampling the poor are done coldly and efficiently, something like just taking care of some Iraqis with precision weapons.

The conservatives at the bottom exhibit more raw visceral "hate" (emanating from fear) and this is used to advantage by the neocons at the top, who pretend they care about family values but are really all about greed, power, narcissism. All they care about is themselves and their buddies.

The unholy alliance.

51. I'm suggesting there was intense hatred for Britain in colonial India
Gandhi did not turn back the British by himself. His quote is a lesson in humility for me and would work if we all weren't getting poked in the eye constantly. Someone has to hold their hands off long enough for some breathing room. Until the poking becomes less intense I think its only natural to feel hatred and anger. I don't think DUers revel in the anger because progressives for the most part didn't poke back with such "DU ferocity" for a very long time.

For the most part the hatred is just in words and apparently the occassional pie in the face (something I find a bit childish myself), none of it rises to the level of a hate crime. That's what the people we are fighting for face. I don't mind the hatred as long as it is episodic, located in language, and its target is the anti-democratic/constitution/bill of rights crowd who want to legitimize their own prejudices. As long as its in defense of the defensable and not an offense to our collective sentiments, I say have at it.

46. Love and Loathing onDU
Big picture: this sunny Sunday morning, two threads are side by side, created and kicked at the same moment. One comments on the dishonesty of the Wrong Wing slogan "Culture of Life. The other reflects "all the hate" the poster perceives on DU. Balance here? Love and Hate intertwining on DU.

"A Culture of Love"
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=104&topic_id=3457963#3458184

Stellanoir points out "you know I keep seeing posts about the hate and bitterness but really haven't witnessed it. Maybe I'm not paying close enough attention though."

But you are paying attention, Stella! Your comment points out how we perceive and co-create at DU, gravitating to like minds and expressions, or bumping into irritants....like Life.

DU is what it is. Recently, I have questioned the prevalence of sexist language on DU. Pointed out that it is distracting and divisive; limits discussions, limits participation, limits possible solutions. It seems inconsistent with DU rules and Democratic values.

DU is what it is. Nearly 70,000 voices in a digital tin can, with lots and lots and lots of threads to select from.

So about the time I realize it is a waste of time to nudge DU to be what it isn't, but time to gravitate toward positive threads, this morning provides a synchronicity of Love and Hate to underline the point.

BTW Stellnoir, you are absolutely on the right track. And here at DU you may hear from the "no Balls" and "pink tutu wing" naysayers, who insist on repeating the cliches and age-old mistakes of the regime that needs to change.

49. Our country, as we knew it, for better or worse is being destroyed....
demoished. Our great treasure, our Constitution and Bill of Rights is being stolen. Our leadership is failing us. People are dying by the thousands. Money is being stolen by the billions. A lie is just not a lie it is double, triple, quadruple lie to make people give up. Our school system and learning opportunities are being destroyed. Our jobs and the taxes that come from them are being given away. Billions of dollars are going to weapons that may or may not work or be needed, but profits to a few are guaranteed. Our government allows itself to be infiltratied by the Sharon-Likud Party. Our diplomatic intentions and relations are a disaster.

Now do you want us to be nicey-nice to those who are doing it? Do you want us to love Dem leaders who are participating in it?

The only think you can expect and ask people to do is use less gutter vective and educate others with facts and links.

54. One Thing That I Really Hate About The DU.
The DU and liberals in general. Everything out of the left in the past four years is doom and gloom. It seems like everyday I have to hear about how the sun won't rise tomorrow morning, just because some dumb ass is in the Whitehorse. Everyday i hear "Our economy is about to collapse," "They are spying on all of us" "The world hates us," "They are going to invade every country" "The world will soon be no more." There is more drama here then in a Mexican soap opera. Lighten the fuck up. Yes, things are not good right now but America has survived worse times then this. I know that if anyone reads this, I will take a lot of flack for it but all of the whining and moaning and depression is not helping anything. Just sit back, calm down and wait until 2006. If half of you put as much energy into going out and trying to fix the problems that you see, as you put into bitching here, then maybe we would have all of these problems.

I would just change your sentiment from "lying back" to "doing something positive and constructive". Democrats in general, and many DUers specificially, fall into the trap of being reactive and not proactive. We need to start proposing rational solutions to the problems that we identify. And, "getting rid of Bush" is not the rational solution I am talking about. We have to think and plan beyond that.

65. Exactly
Take me for example. I have been a member here for a few months and haven't posted that much, which means that i don't spend time here worrying about this or that. Now, don't get me wrong, it is very important that we have boards like the du to get information out there but it is not good when people 70,000 people are collectively saying "we are screwed." Let me tell you all what I have done. Instead of spending all of my time here, I took something that I was concerned about, the environment, and went out and did something. For awhile, I was a volunteer with the Illinois EPA and i helped monitor water quality and the health of the forests in my community. At this point I am unable to do it because I have some personal issues to take care of but still, i went out and did something. Going out and fixing problems doesn't mean you have to march to D.C. and demand change. You can go out and volunteer your time, help people and so on. We don't need to rely on the President or Congress to fix our problems. We are all capable of making some kind of difference.

I can't understand how we can have such different impressions?

You must confuse determination and frankness about the situation the US is in, with hate. That is incorrect.

And this is the Internet. People speak their minds.
This goes for any board about any topic wherever you go in the world ;-) You'll find knitters engaged in what at first sight might appear to be the Knitters World War, but when you get into the stuff, you'll see it's just a debate about the rights and the wrongs..

75. bertha, I agree with what you're saying.
While I can understand anger, I cannot and do not accept hate. Hate is not a progressive value. Hate never wins over converts - at least, not the kind you want hanging around in your living room.

It is one thing to direct one's own anger at a situation (ex: I am angry that Bob Dole supported the Swift-Boat assholes), but it is a mental leap to say "I hate Bob Dole."

But the trend which I find most disturbing is the way that some DU'ers have begun turning on each other. Whether the topic is religion, DLC, Schiavo, or cats vs. birds - some people have taken the opportunity to pile on, writing vicious and hateful things to other DU'ers (which they probably wouldn't have the courage to say to them IRL).

I've said it before: I think some people could benefit greatly from a course in civility and good manners. At the very least, we should be treating one another with respect.

Thank you for your post.

I came here last July upon the recommendation of a fellow Kerry campaign worker, and this site was like a breath of fresh air -- actual intelligent commentary on a message forum. But after November, something changed here. This place has gotten meaner, more cliquish...

I still come to read the articles that others post because I know I won't see them anywhere else. But it's like we are eating our own here. And I find that very sad.

98. They made the hate, it's just finally starting to blow back at them
Edited on Sun Apr-10-05 02:36 PM by Tactical Progressive
Nasty, nasty people are in control of the United States, from the presidency through the legislature, enabled by supporters in most of America's journalism mills and ever moreso in the judiciary, all the way down to the guy next door, whose moral values of bigotry and greed are being given full vent. Through illegal, unethical and just plain ugly means.

The results are bad and they're going to get alot worse over the next four to ten years. Anyone who is not very angry at what's happening, how it's happening, and what's coming out of it, is the one with a problem. Hopefully it's one of obliviousness, but if it continues to be self-righteous, misguided ideology, along with apathy, this country is going to be in very bad shape soon.

You take all of that, in an environment of powerlessness to stop it, and you should understand pretty well where the hatred comes from.

More personally, if you end up one of the victims, or start seeing yourself as a very likely imminent victim, say about to get thrown out on the street, you won't need anyone to explain it to you. I'm guessing you haven't been too inconvenienced personally by the corrupt hard right shift and all of the destructiveness that is resulting. Either that or you have a really unprovokable disposition. But frankly, you don't sound like that, with your accusations of hatred and bullshit and your loathing a good community. Sometimes.
