Houston Chron. NOT happy with DeLay-time to resign!
//Sam Rayburn served in the U.S. House of Representatives for half a century, 35 years as majority leader and speaker. A man of considerable power in the Congress and the Democratic Party, Rayburn's integrity was legendary. He refused even travel expenses for speaking engagements, shunned lobbyists' favors and was respected for his fairness by members on both sides of the aisle.

What would "Mr. Sam" say of his fellow Texan, House Majority Leader Tom DeLay, R-Sugar Land, whose nakedly unethical behavior and disregard for the democratic process have put him in the spotlight in the current Congress?

1. Let Delay stay as the shining example of NeoCON corruption
Hey...let the dude linger as long as possible. I personally love the dark mark he's giving his fine-not-so-upstanding-fellow-Republicans!

Frist and Delay both remind me of Nixon.

4. How do Frist and Delay remind you of Nixon?
Nixon was a saint compared to those two sleazes!

2. Isn't This What Morrison Said The Other Day?
The man whose trying to oust DeLay in Sugarland? Someone posted a link to his site and he drew the parallels to Rayburn as well. This could be very good stuff indeed. The natives are getting a little restless.

I still think, like others I've seen posted here, we need the Bugman around and need to really put some sunshine on him for a bit. Let's let him do a Captain Queeg on us...slowly self-destruct himself on the public stage as all his tangled webs are slowly exposed. Even better is if Mr. DeLay's newfound "toxicity" can start sticking on others.

My dream is more stuff comes out about his PACs and shady financial dealings and more names come forward in how he's abused his power and intimidates his minions. Give him a microphone and let him shrill about how he's being persecuted...let him make a total ass out of himself as he slowly drowns in his own hypocries. Then...comes the indictment in Tarrant County and I get the popcorn ready for one hell of a fun trial.

Cheers!

3. I have such contempt for this guy that I don't want him
to get away with anything. If justice is deferred, he could slide out from under all the scandals. But I too will sit back with the popcorn!

5. I always forget about Sam Rayburn
Even though I live 40 miles from his home in Bonham.
Maybe it's not so bad to remind people of his greatness and the necessity to compare Tom repeatedly to the same set of standards to show his miserable failings to the people of the US.

>>>>snip
In 1912 he was elected to the United States Congress as a Democrat from the Fourth Texas District. After the 1912 election Rayburn had no Republican opponent at any time during his lengthy congressional career.
His oath of office on April 7, 1913, as a member of the House of Representatives marked the beginning of more than forty-eight years of continuous service, the longest record of service in the House ever established (at the time of his death in 1961).
>>>snip

Sad thing now is that if Sam lived during the tenure of Tom Delay...he would have been redistricted due to the neocons sleazy politics.

11. I live in Sam Rayburn country, too.
Lots of folks say that if Rayburn were alive today, eh would be a republican. I tell them that they are out of their mind-he would be a Democrat, and Democrats would be more like him. Moral, ethical, full of integrity, fair, honest, and respectful. We will not see his like again.

12. You are correct
sadly.:(
I see you are in Denison. I played softball for Denison when I was younger. Won two state tourneys, placed 1st and 3rd in nationals respectively. Of course, that was back in the 70's when I was in High School..long long time ago, lol.

6. This is not the Houston Chronicle saying this....
its an independent writer that they are featuring on the Op-Ed page today. That said, its a good strong, principled article.

9. Exactly. That is the view of of the woman who wrote the
article, not necessarily the editors.

7. DeLay's arrogance is unsurpassed.
He will walk of Washington just as arrogant and full of revenge no matter when it happens. At some point in his existence he erased every trace of humility from his psyche.

8. Go to LBN and read a preview of the Newsweek article coming out
tomorrow, wherein Abramoff tells a lunch companion that DeLay knew everything, he knew all the details. Sounds like Abramoff is ready to make a deal and expose everyone and every thing. Also at newsweek.com and msnbc.com
