1. Can someone explain the M for Mary that was with the cross on the lid
to the coffin?

I'm not Catholic, and don't remember seeing that before. Was it because JPII belonged to some special order or something?

5. As you said, the 'M' stands for Mary, "Mother of God" as she is called in
the Roman Catholic Church.

Pope John-Paul had a special devotion to Mary. He lost his own mother as young child, and turned to Mary as his heavenly mother.

The 'M' on his casket honors that relationship.

6. The same symbol on the reverse of a "Miraculous Medal".

The Meaning of the Back Side of the Miraculous Medal

The twelve stars can refer to the Apostles, who represent the entire Church as it surrounds Mary. They also recall the vision of Saint John, writer of the Book of Revelation (12:1), in which “a great sign appeared in heaven, a woman clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of 12 stars.” The cross can symbolize Christ and our redemption, with the bar under the cross a sign of the earth. The “M” stands for Mary, and the interleaving of her initial and the cross shows Mary’s close involvement with Jesus and our world. In this we see Mary’s part in our salvation and her role as mother of the Church. The two hearts represent the love of Jesus and Mary for us. (See also Lk 2:35).

I knew he lost his mother and that's a nice story of how he was with Mary. :) I hope he's resting after all his work.

37. God's a Busy Guy
I'm not only lapsed, I'm outright collapsed. ie, not of the faith. But I like this little system and if I were a practicing Catholic, I'd use it.

God's a busy guy. So's Jesus. What Catholics do is reach out to "advocates" if you will, so as not to hog up God's time.

No one can be as good as God, or Jaysus. But they can try to be as good as another imperfect human who was good enough to be named a saint.

3. Im Tired

Of hearing about him and his death....let the Old Pontiff rest in peace......I thought it deplorable that they would lay him out for 5 days......His death like Schiavo was turned into a media circus.

The Catholic Church should have done the Pope a favor and retired him 5 years ago.

12. Sorry to offend your faith but .....
..... I am too sick of this pomp and falderal. The Catholic church is getting
every mile out the Pope's death. It would not surprise me that they
pick a really old Pope so they can put on another 3 ring circus of
Pope passing on.

BTW Why don't you ask any one of the thousands of people who took
the $2,000.00, the year of therapy, and signed the boiler plate document
which protected the Church from future legal actions by the victims of
sexual predators that were working for the Church about how they feel
feel for the "Holy Father?"

He moved Bernard Law, the Boston bishop who had to resign because he started the cover up, to the Vatican. That means the pope was personally involved.

43. Look here.
www.miami.com/mld/miamiherald/news/breaking_news/11336350.htm

The Vatican announced Thursday he will lead one of the daily Masses celebrated in the pope's memory during the nine-day period that follows the funeral, called Novemdiales. The service will be held Monday at Rome's St. Mary Major Basilica, where Law was appointed archpriest after leaving Boston. "

Figure out when Law left (fled in 2002) Boston and you'll know approximately when he was appointed archpriest to the Vatican.

And if that link isn't good enough, here's a link to a Yahoo News search:

45. Not good enough. Not good enough by half.
Law essentially assisted with the psychological damage of untold numbers of children and we're just supposed to forgive him for this?
Instead of telling him to face the consequences of his actions, the Vatican gives him asylum where he can live out the rest of his days.
There is no fucking way I will forgive Law for this, no matter what you think the Vatican has done.

20. the real story
there were two major sections of the country, Albequerque and Boston that were concentrated with the scandal. The Pope had nothing to doa with any of this; by the way, many if not most of the priests were found guilty and are behind bars. As you stated, a "bishop" was found fondling an altar boy? Where? When? Again, how was the Pope involved?

32. Fox News?
That's your best? Just because I don't agree with the posture of this thread, I must work for Fox News..Each individual diocese has autonomous rule over the parishes. Sure, there were mistakes, but NOT the Pope's fault. How many sex cases in the Episcopal, Methodist churches have been reported?

38. The Pope was involved because he promoted Bernard Law,
the bishop in Boston, to the Vatican. THAT is a coverup and a tacit approval of the way Law handled the pedophile scandals.

And it's estimated that 7-10% of RC priests were involved in the scandal - that's hardly 'two major sections of the country'. In the upper Midwest, there were many cases of priest pedophilia, including, many think, Jacob Wetterling, the 11 year old boy who disappeared in 1989. He lived near an RC campus where several pedophiles were moved to after they were caught.

46. The Catholic Church doesn't have 2000 years of history,
Since that 2000 years, it has been full of blood wars and ignorance, it is rich with a beloved history that should make angels smile. The 14 books of the Septuagint included in the Vulgate are questionable and I'm certain that's why the Russian & Greek Orthodox has included all fourteen books. Maybe that's why the Roman Catholic split from the Orthodox churches about eighteen hundred years ago?

The mass certainly isn't enthralled with the Pope's funeral are they?
