Mexican migrants undeterred by "Minutemen"

NOGALES, Mexico (Reuters) - New patrols of self-styled militia members in Arizona will do little to stop a flow of Mexicans crossing the U.S. border that tighter federal security has failed to stem, say migrants waiting to cross.

The numbers of Mexicans crossing into the area now being patrolled by scores of "Minuteman" volunteers are expected to ease for the next three or four weeks, but many expect the migrants to simply shift their crossing points along the border.

Even in the bustling border city of Nogales, which lies close to the Minuteman patrol zone, the old game of cat-and-mouse goes on.

"Any Mexican would be afraid of them, but we are going to try to cross anyway," Valentin Omedo, a 39-year-old from Oaxaca state in southern Mexico said of the militiamen as he rested on Sunday night with companions outside a Nogales hostel.

1. Of course they'll keep trying,
and new, more dangerous ways will be devised to cross which will result in more needless death. Way to go, militia nut-cases.

2. A guy I work with is going down there to be a "Minuteman".
He's almost 70 years old and I've told him he has no idea what he is getting into. Xenophobia takes precedence over common sense though.

3. I would liek to see these Minuteman here in July
when it's hot and the migrants are dying out there in the desert. They can only be in Cochise County where the Sherriff there wont do anything to deter them. He's friends with the Ranch Rescue people.

Both Sheriffs in Santa Cruz and Pima Counties will have different ideas.

4. ...
Some people will eventually get shot and then the crap will hit the fan... It's not like some of the mexicans crossing don't have weapons either. Most of them probably have knives at the very least...
