Jim Crow is back.
Michigan Preparing To Let Doctors Refuse To Treat Gays

(Lansing, Michigan) Doctors or other health care providers could not be disciplined or sued if they refuse to treat gay patients under legislation passed Wednesday by the Michigan House.
The bill allows health care workers to refuse service to anyone on moral, ethical or religious grounds.

11. And the Hippocratic Oath
Whatever houses I may visit, I will come for the benefit of the sick, remaining free of all intentional injustice, of all mischief and in particular of sexual relations with both female and male persons, be they free or slaves.

And, as a sign of the times:

Similarly I will not give to a woman an abortive remedy. In purity and holiness I will guard my life and my art.

5. Not just procedures, now, but patients:
the word for this policy is murder. What happened to that so-called culture of life? What happens when a doc mistakenly thinks someone is gay: and refuses to treat a bishop, a conservative homemakes, a politician? Even the RC Church should denounce this.

9. Let it work both ways then. A gay doctor can refuse to treat a xian
saying the same re:morality.

Man, I will NEVER go to Michigan. Let the fat tire peddler who looks like he ate too many marshmallows die of coronary failure.

10. It just goes to show, fundies are EVERYWHERE, not just in the South
Illinois passed a law allowing pharmacists to deny filling prescriptions of birth control based on the same premise.

Several other states have also allowed them to discriminate against women.

Hopefully, both of these efforts to legalize discrimination will get struck down in the courts.

15. Illinois?
the governor just did the opposite.

http://us.cnn.com/2005/US/04/01/birth.control.governor.ap/index.html

CHICAGO, Illinois (AP) -- Gov. Rod Blagojevich approved an emergency rule Friday requiring pharmacies to fill birth control prescriptions quickly after a Chicago pharmacist refused to fill an order because of moral opposition to the drug.

17. Pharmacists in Illinois were discriminating against women
That's what caused the emergency rule to be made by the Gov. There were big protests in Chicago against a pharmacy that was refusing to fill prescriptions of BC.

A pharmacist in WI ended up in court for refusing to fill BC prescriptions.

Point being, there are fundies everywhere!

12. Not only gays
"The bill allows health care workers to refuse service to anyone on moral, ethical or religious grounds."

Can a fundie refuse treatment to a Muslim, a Jew, a Hindu, an atheist? What about drug addicts? What about treating an unmarried woman for complications of a miscarriage? What about venereal disease? Would it be a problem to treat a morbidly obese person, who the health care worker deems to be guilty of 'gluttony'? A person who has served a sentence for the unethical act of embezzlement can be refused treatment? What about someone who cusses? What if I have a pro-choice bumper-sticker on my car and they deem me immoral? What if I have a Kerry sticker... some may deem me immoral. Some regard wearing makeup as immoral. What if they know I dance sometimes? What if they don't like the fact that I had a margarita Friday night?

What are we coming to?

14. That is disgusting.
I hope there aren't many doctors who would actually refuse treatment to anyone based on something that's none of their goddamned business. If there are, I say BOYCOTT THEM. I don't know if I can take much more of this shit. The human race needs to grow the fuck up and evolve, already.

18. I really doubt this will pass muster with the SCOTUS.
In fact, it probably wont't pass the Mi. Senate either.

Of course, there's another thought here. If you are gay, do you really WANT to be treated by a medical professional with that much prejudice?
