Massive seal cull begins
By Paul Sims, Evening Standard
30 March 2005

Thousands of hunters armed with clubs, rifles and spears have begun the world's largest seal cull on the ice floes off eastern Canada.

Turning the ice red with blood, they killed hundreds of pups during the first day of the annual harp seal hunt.

The cull, which has been the target of protests since the 1960s, will mean the slaughter of up to 320,000 young seals on the floes and islands around Quebec's les de la Madeleine in the Gulf of St Lawrence.

"It's just horrific out there," said Rebecca Aldworth of the Humane Society of the United States. "There is blood all across the ice and seal carcasses as far as the eye can see. We've seen seals that were moving around and breathing, that have been left in these piles, some left conscious and crawling.

How do people do this?

3. Danger wears a red hat:

Danger wears a red hat: A hunter approaches a harp seal on an ice floe in the Gulf of St. Lawrence, Prince Edward Island, as the annual clubbing of the seals begins in eastern Canada. Animal-rights activists have condemned the world largest seal hunt as barbaric.

If people could see footage of this maybe they'll care.

9. Oh God . . . I hate this time of year. They started allowing them to do
this again starting last year (I think). It is so cruel. I wish I could go up there and club their ass.

They want that Almighty dollar like any murderer that kills for profit. And yes, killing an animal is murder to me.

Scientists have done studies on all animals and state that most mammals reach the cognitive age of a 2-year-old child; however, without speech, of course; however, they do communicate with their own peers. So whenever I hear of animal being slaughtered, I send a letter stating they have just killed another 2-year-old child (metaphorically, of course. I cannot compare the killing of an animal to a 2-year-old child, so please do not misinterpret my meaning here. I'm not looking for a fight but some understanding).

17. I don't know if that post was intended to be a joke, but I've also heard
that seal meat tastes awful. In Collapse, Jared Diamond notes that the Norse in Greenland could have lasted longer there (though why they would want to is anyone's guess) if they had adopted the Inuit custom of eating harp seal during hard times. But they didn't even consider doing it because seal is an acquired taste that they never thought worth acquiring.

But I don't think this seal kill is all about meat, is it? It's about the fur, isn't it?

23. Seal skin is very water resistant.
Edited on Wed Mar-30-05 02:05 PM by Minstrel Boy
If I were an Innu, or living where winter was extreme, I would want a pair of seal skin boots.

"These traditional seal skin boots are to be worn in winter. A rubber overshoe and felt lining is included in this package. The boot is hand stitched with pleated toes and heels. The locally made bark tanned seal skin is available in light and dark. These boots are also available with the seal fur legs and bark tanned seal skin bottoms."

16. Come on folks....
We have perverted the lives of many animals. We raise animals for food who in their lives may never stand in the sun. Now what kind of society perverts the lives of animals for food and has a fit when seals get killed for their fur?

The kind that has to be told when it is acceptable to be outraged.

It's disgraceful really.

22. The real disgrace, if you ask me (which you haven't)
Is knowing that we pervert the lives of these animals (all of them, food, fur or otherwise) yet we continue on, doing nothing about it.

Too many just shrug their shoulders and live with it, let it go on. I'm outraged at the whole damn lot of it.

24. Flipping the issue.
If you really want to start to change this you can.

I did last summer when I had enough with the perverted methods industry uses to raise chickens. I bought my own to raise for fresh eggs not meat just eggs.

It's not the big solution but it's better then looking for something to do!

How many people know that chickens don't lay white eggs?

It costs me 10 bucks a month to feed them. They produce more then 10 bucks in fertilizer a month.

Maybe it's just me but change is something we have to do, not want.

25. What you've done is admirable
If you insist on eating eggs, then I see no issue with raising your own chickens to lay eggs. Chickens, battery hens specifically, are the most inhumanely treated animal in the food industry. For that reason, I don't eat them OR their eggs.

I agree that change is something we have to do, not want to do.
