The 600 students at Cross Bayou Elementary School will be split among three neighboring schools, said Pinellas County schools spokesman Ron Stone. The school is located just west of the Woodside Hospice, where protesters and media have gathered since Terri Schiavo's feeding tube was removed March 18.
"It is felt that the unstable and highly emotional environment that currently exists at the Woodside Hospice and the security measures currently in place by law enforcement will make it difficult for school to function normally," schools superintendent Clayton Wilcox said in a statement Sunday.
The two facilities are located on a dead-end street, and students must pass the hospice before reaching school. During the last week the school was open, police had to escort students through the maze of protesters to ensure safety.
