More than 1,200 Bay area soldiers with the 53rd Infantry Brigade are being sent to Afghanistan to fight the global war on terror this week.

But before heading overseas, they spent some final precious moments with loved ones at the new National Guard Armory in Pinellas Park.

Sons and daughters of the 53rd Infantry Brigade painted an American flag with their palms as a final salute to their parents before they're deployed to Afghanistan.


The soldiers are being deployed throughout the rest of March. Exact dates of their departures were not disclosed for security reasons.
