7. I think we need to remember
while I'd glad that Terri's wishes are being carried out, this is a tragic event for people close to her. They are having a hard time letting go, and I can understand how easy it would be to try to hold onto a child even when the child is so obviously gone.

This isn't a show and there isn't a good part.

The good part is when they are backed into a corner and have only violent measures left to appease the radical clerics.

I heard that guy state that, if Jeb didn't impose his power,...he was proving that they (the religious righteous ones) had been "used".

Yup. NOW,...the radicals are starting to get that they have been betrayed, too!!

Hilarious!!!

I might add that, even the court-appointed guardian is pressed against the wall,...being a conservative that served,...well,...I'll just shut up, for now.

It's a bit hard becasue the reason they're getting desperate is because Terri Schiavo is nearing a final and long overdue death, and that must be terribly hard on the people around her, regardless of how overdue it is.

47. Well, guess what, they made it a political issue that affects all of us
And the Bush bros are losing. Their political failure is worthy of celebration.

I'm sure we all have lost loved ones and understand what that means. We've cared for them, sat with them while they died, decided or helped them to decide to end medical treatment. Of course that's a painful and tragic situation for Terri and her family.

But, this has become a political matter that has to do with OUR civil liberties. OUR RIGHT to control our end of life decisions.

He'll send in the troopers with orders to bring her into state custody and they'll be met by sheriffs with orders to keep her in the hospice.

You'll have two armed governmental forces with opposing orders facing off at about midnight tonight.

Is this a constitutional crisis?

What happens if what you mention in your post happens? It's completely illegal, right?

24. I'm not an attorney
but my wife is and I used to read her books while she was doing her homework.

It would be extermely illegal for Bush to go in and take her since this is in regards to a case that has been ruled upon multiple times by the courts. This case is not covered under the auspices of the state statute because the courts have determined the outcome of the case. He would be committing multiple felonies if he did it including kidnapping. Nothing short of a presidential pardon could save his ass.

34. I don't think there's any worry on Jebbie's part of a pardon
I think he can pretty much count on that, no matter what he does.

So essentially, he has nothing to fear, and people who have nothing to fear can do very weird things that the rest of us, being normal people with normal fears, wouldn't even imagine doing.

The current circus won't end until Terri Schiavo stops breathing. There will always be another rabbit pulled out of someone's hat, another reason to take it to another court, another hope that someone will force the reinsertion of the feeding tube and the show will then continue.

As Yogi said, it ain't over 'til it's over. I remember the 2001 Arizona Diamondbacks, so I'm not popping the champagne until the last out is out.

with Jebbie his little brother is ruler of the freeworld. So his little brother can get him out of jail easily. Or his poppy can call in some favors. It's been shown over the last few years these people think they are above the law anyways. If they don't like it they ignore it and try to change it.

They'll make up some lame "we did all we could, now it's time to reform the way the judiciary works so they can't stop us in the future" crap and the fundies will buy it hook, line and sinker.

55. The fundie base has been whipped into a froth on this case for seven years
Bob Schindler went to the radical clerics hat in hand to get their help to make his son-in-law's life miserable because the money from the settlement was going to be used for treatment and treatment alone.

The Radical Clerics whipped their followers into a froth and have been pounding away at it for seven years now. They cried havoc and let slip the dogs of war seven years agoi, and there is no way whatsoever to reign in all of that hatred now.

129. Here's the link...it was Bill Schneider who said it...
JUDY WOODRUFF'S INSIDE POLITICS
http://transcripts.cnn.com/TRANSCRIPTS/0503/24/ip.01.html

~snip~

WILLIAM SCHNEIDER, CNN SR. POLITICAL ANALYST (voice-over): President Bush's job rating over the weekend, before he and Congress acted in the Terri Schiavo case, 52 percent. President Bush's job rating in a poll taken this week, after the bill to turn the case over to the federal courts was passed into law, 45 percent. A CBS News poll shows a similar decline in the president's ratings from 49 percent last month to 43 percent now.

Are we seeing evidence of political backlash from the Schiavo case? We have to be careful. Gas prices are up. And so are negative views about the economy. Just in the past two weeks, the number of Americans who say the economy is getting worse has jumped nine points to nearly 60 percent. But there are also reasons to suspect a Schiavo backlash. Congress has been in the spotlight on the Schiavo case, and approval of Congress has been dropping as well, down seven points since last month.

Public opinion about the Schiavo case is very one-sided. Particularly on this question: Should Congress and the president be involved in deciding what happens to Terri Schiavo? Only 13 percent of Americans say yes. An overwhelming 82 percent say no, including large majorities of conservatives, Republicans, church-goers and even two-thirds of white evangelicals. The public does not want a case like this contaminated by politics.

Among the minority of Americans who believe Congress and the president should be involved in the Schiavo case, Bush's job approval is 67 percent. The president's approval drops to less than 40 percent among the huge majority who think politicians should stay out of it. Which may explain why the president is sounding more cautious.

~~

So I was wrong; presidential approval rating is less than 40% when asked of the 82% who think the prez & Congress should butt out of the Schiavo matter. But hey, nuttin' wrong with that 43% from the CBS poll.

For sure Nixon went way down, I think he was in the low twenties in '74. Heh heh, he was down in the negatives for the majority of us who wanted to throw that bum out!

31. I Had No Idea It Would Turn Out Like This A Week Ago
Edited on Thu Mar-24-05 04:12 PM by Me.
I thought that just like every other time, people would fall all over themselves to get in lock step behind the thugs. Now, hope is dawning and I think I'll get a cup of something and bask in it for a while.

I too can feel compassion for Terri and at the same time appreciate the fact that the finger may just have been removed from the dyke.

As for the parents, I can't help feeling they have been deluding themselves for over a decade and I can't help but wonder what the real motivation behind this situation is. I also, resent the hell out of the way they've been using our courts and trying to twist the separation of power to suit their own ends. When does no finally become no? Their daughter has been receiving the best of care. She hasn't ever had a bed sore which speaks to the level of that care and, for them and their supporters (as Pat Robertson just did) to accuse the husband of murder is unconscionable. Further, I wonder why the tapes we're seeing are four years old? Why don't they show one from a month ago?

72. I for one am not "calling" for it, but I do think it's a very real
possibility.

If I had my druthers, the courts would all find in favor of Michael Schiavo, the judges would publicly denounce the RW fruitloops for their hypocrisy and callousness, the moderate GOOPers would wake up and demand THEIR party back, the congressional wingnuts like DeLay and Hastert and Bunning and Frist and Santimoniousum would be hauled out in cuffs prior to formal impeachment, the two boooshies in power would resign in disgrace and apologise to the world thus paving the way for an interim government headed by Al Gore Jr, John Kerry, and John Edwards (with maybe a minor token role for Lieberman), followed by verifiable paper ballot elections for all 435 seats in congress, all 100 senators (since all 100 seats would have been up for election at least once between 2000, 2002, and 2004), and president/VP by 01 May 2005.

That's *my* perfect world. It ain't gonna happen.

I don't want the tanks to come out. I don't want Jeb to call out the FLNG to storm the hospice and "rescue" Terri Schiavo.

But I also understand that sometimes the only way out of a crisis is to bring it to a head. Sometimes you have to call the bullies' bluff, rather like Kennedy and Khrushchev over Cuba in 1962. The Cuban Missile Crisis didn't end the cold war, however, all it did was keep it from escalating into a nuclear hot war. The cold war, and the nuclear threats, lasted almost another 30 years.

I don't know what will end the current red v blue confrontation in the US. It might take a shooting war. I hope not, but I'm not ruling it out.

76. Like everything else that starts "wars," Terri Schiavo, poor thing,
is merely a symbol. The issues built up around her -- "right to life" for instance -- are far bigger. She's merely the focal point, but the issues are larger and more amorphous, but once they have a "face," they're real.

Wasn't it John Kennedy who said he wanted to document the Cuban Missile Crisis because there was so much confusion about the causes for WW1, and if we got into a war over Cuba, he wanted people to know why?

The fundies really do want a revolution. Can "Remember Terri!" rally the troops the way "Remember the Alamo!" or "Remember the Maine!" did in the past? I don't know. But I'm keeping an open mind. . . . . and spending way too much time on DU! ;-)

I'll agree with you on that. They are so frustrated with their inability to turn the clock back to 1950 they want to pop. But I guess my point is, MOST of the population agrees with US. Now that the mask is beginning to tear, and more and more people are realizing that Shrub and his lil brudda are pandering to the RW base who elected them and not serving us, the American people, is that really a cause for a revolution? I mean, do WE want a revolution? Hmmmmmmm....

97. No, crispini, "WE" don't want a revolution.
"WE" know how ugly it would be, because "WE" are sensible people.

But I'm not sure that the lunatics on the far right fringe can be stopped by anything short of a revolution -- or at least some kind of cataclysm. The shootings at Kent State really were a wake-up call in 1970 and may have been the pivot on which public opinion about the Vietnam War turned. And if we look back even to 2001, as other posters have pointed out, booosh's popularity was tanking that summer, but a catastrophic event turned it around and the booshies were able to milk 9/11 right through 2004. (Had the country been overwhelmingly opposed to booooosh last November, not even Diebold could have handed him the election; 9/11 and other rightwing issues kept it within stealing distance.)

Inertia is a powerful thing. People don't change unless and until they're given a powerful reason to do so. I think there's a good possibility that the true nature of the far right won't be made real to the moderates without a violent action on the part of JEB. I think there's a good possibility that, given the distance to the next election cycle, a failure on Jeb's part to take heroic measures can and will be rationalized so that the boooshies and the neocons don't suffer. Indeed, if Jeb is unable to rescue Terri and she dies, she becomes a martyr to the cause and there is all the more reason to fulminate against those librul activist judges.

Furthermore, absent any radical wrong-doing on the part of the fundies, the dems have little ammunition. If Terri dies, in essence there's no harm, no foul from the fundie interventions, hence no benefit to the Dems. The benefit from gaining a martyr -- the book deals and the tv movie that the Schindlers will authorize being part of that -- will only accrue to the fundies.

**IF** the 82% who disapprove of this were going to the polls tomorrow, it might make a difference, but they aren't. And this is only one issue -- Terri may die, after all, but at least them evil gays can't git married! -- among many supported by the right. The boooshies will have time to regroup, and they'll have the addition of a very public martyr in Terri and her aggrieved (and living!) parents.

So again, no, I don't want a violent confrontation, and I'm sure most of us on this side of the political spectrum don't want it, but I have a feeling it may be the only way to stop the slide into serious Naziesque fascism.
