the GOP's big OOPS re: Schiavo
http://news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/ap/20050324/ap_on_re_us/schiavo_polls

More than two-thirds of people who describe themselves as evangelicals and conservatives disapprove of the intervention by Congress and President Bush in the case of the Terri Schiavo.

<snip>

A CBS News poll found that four of five people polled opposed federal intervention, with levels of disapproval among key groups supporting the GOP almost that high.

<more>

this vote must be made an issue in the mid-terms. each member of congress who voted for it has to be held accountable. remind voters that it was them who seek to expand the government's involvement in their personal lives....

1. Another dividing issue for the Repubs
GREAT!!!! The more things that start dividing them the more likely Bush popularity will continue to sink and when the ship sinks many Repubs in Washington will start jumping ship!

2. "Four of five people opposed the federal intervention"
That gives me a little hope about the people of our country.

7. they're boycotting until there is an up/down vote in the senate for judges
Edited on Thu Mar-24-05 11:45 AM by fryguy
how, preceisly, do they think this would have changed the outcome of the schiavo case? its not like the 11th Circuit or the Supreme Court is some sort of bastion of liberal judges....they're both pretty much stocked with GOP appointees. i mean if it were the 9th Circuit i could see they're possition, but the 11th? c'mon cry babies, get over it - they're the ones out of touch with reality. 51%-49% folks, it ain't a GOP country yet, and it ain't going to be....

on edit: i feel dirty now just having visited FR....

5. That's what the Rs get for only polling those they
have sign those loyalty oaths.

I swear, if I ever hear another R politician or pundit start pontificating on the party as knowing what the majority of Americans think...

They've been wrong on what Americans think the majority of the time. SS, this case, medical care, immigration, national security,... you name it.

8. has it occurred to anyone that it is just as odious...
...to make anti-GOP political hay out of the Terri Schiavo case as it was for the repigs to sieze the issue to begin with? I mean, on the one hand we have Tom DeLay saying that Terri Schiavo is a god-given wedge issue against democrats, and on the other we have DUers saying that the GOP intervention is a perfect wedge issue against the GOP. Despite the fact that some will undoubtedly chime in with ways in which dem exploitation of the GOP's poor choice of issues is "different" from the GOP's exploitation of the Schiavo case, I don't think they're fundamentally that different.

There are MANY crucial issues that the democratic party should be trumpeting to highlight the failures and criminal connivance of the GOP. Terri Schiavo is not one of them, IMO.

9. Then we should frame it as a right to refuse medical
treatment at the end of life. This is far more important than this one case - if they can do this to Terri, despite her wishes, they can do this to ANYONE.

10. You seem to have COMPLETELY missed the point.
The Democrats shouldnt make political hey about Terri Shivo, nor are they nor are we. They should and we are making hay about the Republicans gross misconduct.

And I dont know what dream world you live in, but here on earth, what congress does, and what the party that dominates are government is doing are really big issues for the Democratic party and for Democrats, especially when they are obvious ploys to further polorize the nation.

The republicans are trying to exploit Terri, we are trying to stop them, how on earth could you see those two positions as morally equivelent?

11. and you have responded to something I did not say....
Edited on Thu Mar-24-05 12:33 PM by mike_c
I did not say that "trying to exploit Terri" and trying to stop that exploitation are morally equivalent. I said that republican exploitation of Schiavo and democratic exploitation of republican exploitation are morally similar-- don't try to draw me into the black and white world of moral "equivalence."

For the most part I was responding to this quote in the OP:

this vote must be made an issue in the mid-terms

There are far more important issues for the midterms! Don't let the Schiavo circus divert attention from them. That IS what the GOP was trying to accomplish.

15. This is playing politics with life and death
They need to be nailed to the wall for ignoring real issues in America while screwing around in Florida. This is political malfeasance and they need to be taken to task for it. This isn't just about exploiting their stupidity, it's about unambiguous proof that they have zero clue how to govern.
