DeLay, Deny and Demagogue - Dowd, NYTimes
Edited on Thu Mar-24-05 10:23 AM by rndmprsn
http://www.nytimes.com/2005/03/24/opinion/24dowd.html?hp

CBS POLL 82% oppose the president and congress intervening and 74% said it was all about politics...sounds like our good ole' boys @ the white house and capitol hill overreached a bit...

-snip-

MAUREEN DOWD

Oh my God, we really are in a theocracy.

Are the Republicans so obsessed with maintaining control over all branches of government, and are the Democrats so emasculated about not having any power, that they are willing to turn the nation into a wholly owned subsidiary of the church?...

... As the Bush White House desperately maneuvers in Iraq to prevent the new government from being run according to the dictates of religious fundamentalists, it desperately maneuvers here to pander to religious fundamentalists who want to dictate how the government should be run.

Maybe President Bush should spend less time preaching about spreading democracy around the world and more time worrying about our deteriorating democracy...

...As Christopher Shays, one of five House Republicans who voted against the bill to allow the Terri Schiavo case to be snatched from Florida state jurisdiction and moved to federal court, put it: "This Republican Party of Lincoln has become a party of theocracy. There are going to be repercussions from this vote."

2. Hahahahaha -- Frist:
"As one disgusted Times reader suggested in an e-mail: "Americans ought to send Bill Frist their requests: 'Dear Dr. Frist: Please watch the enclosed video and tell us if that mole on my mother's cheek is cancer. Does she need surgery?'""

LOL

5. And good for Maureen for bringing this out:
Edited on Thu Mar-24-05 10:28 AM by Der Engel der Katzen
"While Senate Democrats like Hillary Clinton, who are trying to curry favor with red staters, meekly allowed the shameful legislation to be enacted, at least some Floridian House members decided to put up a fight, though they knew they couldn't win."

Clinton and the other Dems on Capitol Hill are not not gods & goddesses. They are just people, as flawed as anyone else in Congress. And they blew it on this one. The could've spoken up, but chose not to rock the boat. Pander, pander, pander. It's shameful.

10. The "Paine" part is to honor Thomas Paine.
Overall, it is a play on words.

12. duh... I didn't even notice the "e"
I just pictured coffins falling out of the backs of hearses and the dead saying "ow!" Heh... sorry.

Love it more now that I know it's Paine.

7. The religious radicals are also becoming more brazen.
They're demanding Jeb send in officers to forcibly collect Terri.

I have to laugh. The assholes are finally getting a bit of well-deserved blowback and I sincerely hope that their latest political ploy freakin' murders their own party.

15. Can you imagine if libs did this?
Edited on Thu Mar-24-05 10:45 AM by TheFarseer
We'd be communists and fascists and every other thing. Talking heads would be crying that we think we're above the law and think we're smarter than God and we're not thinking with our heads and letting emotion cause us to foam at the mouth and throw reason out the window. The worst they can say of fundies is they respectfully disagree with them.

And bring Collins, Snowe, and Chafee with you.

14. I wonder
Does MoDo ever look back upon the 90's and the 2000 election and wonder to herself what might have been had she not participated in keeping Al Gore out of his rightfully earned position in the white house?

16. I would like to think that Shays,a republican, actually saying the
word 'theocracy' would open the eyes of republicans across the country.

I'm afraid that it only means he will be targetted in the next election.

18. A great article without a drop of "Cutesie"
Which the esteemed Ms. Dowd sometimes dabbles in. It's pure outrage (which it should be.)

It's too bad so few will read it. It's even more too bad that the Schiavo family has to go through this (Those poor people - I would think it must be like going through a hundred deaths...)
