Jim Moran (D-VA) and Jeff Miller (R-FL) on Hardball
I know we're trying to avoid the cable news networks, but Hardball just ended a great segment with Miller and Moran. Chris Matthews was being extremely hard on the wingnut, asking about how sincere the Republicans are, when some haven't even learned how to pronounce Schiavo's name (hint: it ain't how it's spelled). Miller then said something about Moran "refusing to say the Pledge of the United States in the House." Moran then corrected him, saying "I think you have me confused with Jim McDermott." Miller just looked down with a blank expression for a few seconds, then returned with "yes, you're correct."

I love idiot Republicans. :D

2. How does Tweety think it's pronounced?
Edited on Wed Mar-23-05 07:41 PM by stopbush
Because it''s an Italian name that *should be* pronounced "Skee-ah-vo." The closest person to getting it right that I've heard is Larry King who - when he had Michael on his show the other night - pronounced it "Shee-ah-vo" (I don't know why Larry had a hard time pronouncing the "Sch" in Schiavo like the "Sch" in school...which is correct). But Michael never corrected Larry, so I assume he's OK with Shee-ah-vo.

All I know is that "Shy-vo" is wrong if you're demanding - as it seems is Tweets - a "correct" pronunciation. I don't even think Michael says it that way.

And how does Tweet's pronounce it anyway? If he's not insisting on the true Italian pronunciation, then it's really up for grabs and sort of a non-issue because Italian Americans are famous for altering the pronunciation of their Italian surnames, and a name like Schiavo - while having one pronunciation in Italy and most of the rest of the world - could have hundreds of acceptable pronunciations in the USA.

3. Miller is the exemplar of what I hate about Republicans.
Parroting the "party line," arguing for the moral high ground, and belittling anyone who disagrees. What an asshat.

McDermott didn't refuse to say the pledge, he just left out "under god".
