HERE WE GO FOLKS! "Gov.Jeb seeks to take custody of Schiavo"
Edited on Wed Mar-23-05 06:23 PM by Bluebear
4 minutes ago

PINELLAS PARK, Fla. - Terri Schiavo's parents saw their options vanish one by one Wednesday as a federal appeals court refused to re-insert her feeding tube and the Florida Legislature decided not to intervene in the epic struggle. Refusing to give up, Gov. Jeb Bush sought court permission to take custody of Schiavo.

The desperate flurry of activity came as President Bush suggested that Congress and the White House had done all they could to keep the severely brain-damaged woman alive.

As of Wednesday afternoon, Schiavo had gone five full days without food or water; doctors have said she could survive one to two weeks.

Supporters of Schiavo's parents grew increasingly dismayed, and 10 protesters were arrested outside her hospice for trying to bring her water.

9. Sadly, I agree.
I want Terri Schiavo to rest in peace. But I'm also kind of morbidly interested in seeing to what length these lunatics would go to.

20. I agree
And it's so like big brother to take care of the situation. Bush claimed he and Congress couldn't do anything so now they won't blame him they'll blame his brother. These people are freakin nuts!

15. I'm almost tempted to agree...
At this point, public sentiment is against those wanting to keep her in a vegetative state. However, once she dies, I fear that sentiment will swing back the other way, as the predominant emotions will be sadness at her death and sympathy with her (birth) family's loss. All that will be remembered about the Schindlers and their Republican backers is that they "heroically, if vainly, sought to save her life," and the issue will be framed as to how they were "kept from saving her" by the "death Democrats."

Looking at it cynically, I'd have to agree with the BugMan -- that this case could provide a political windfall for the Repugs, but only when she dies. On the other hand, as long as she's kept alive, the issue works for us, not them.

Of course, that would merely be treating Terri as a political pawn, just as the Republicans are seeking to do.

28. What's Randall Terry's Email?
We should ask him where the hell he was when a hospital let a little baby die against the mother's wishes...

7. Judge Greer ordered law enforcement to prevent Jeb

and the Dept. of Children and Families from gaining physical access to T. Schiavo.

The woman from DCF said they don't need a court order. They can file for one within 24 hours of taking custody. (There is an article in the Palm Beach Post.)

It sounds as though Jeb will not make this attempt, though.

16. Okay. Now, I am praying to God that Terri finally can go home,...
,...in spite of all the human beings playing god, manipulating facts to empower themselves, selfishly asserting their power while demonstrating no respect whatsoever for the ALIVE Terri,...when she was a living participant,...and indicated that, in her mind, living without the capacity to independently act in one's own life,...is no life.

I truly wish control freaks would get control over themselves instead of imposing their will on the most powerless among us.

33. I love this woman enough to be outraged at others' manipulation of her.

I just cannot believe any normal, caring, compassionate human being could possibly allow these control freaks to use her in such a way!!!

Is our sense of humanity being completely SPENT by those who proclaim MANDATES and impose their will,...in such a way?

I just feel so,...horrified at what this country has become.

Yet, I do feel that, when Terri is finally released from the control of evil hearts,...I will celebrate her peace.

and then throw the book at the person for making false statements and DCF for not investigating the truthfulness.

I would think not.

Edit: I don't know that DCF ever actually went to the hospice. They (& Jeb) were saying they would take custody based on claims of abuse.

22. That's one thing that worries me...
...I keep thinking that, once she dies, one of those clinic-bomber types may decide to take "revenge" on Michael for "killing Terri." I think he would have about the same level of safety as Salman Rushdie taking a leisurely stroll through downtown Tehran.

Edited on Wed Mar-23-05 09:35 PM by ultraist
They cannot give non-kin guardianship without that person going through training.

They have tried this before and the last report of abuse they made, Adult protective services refused to investigate saying it was a false report, just a ploy.

APS is not obligated to investigate every report. They determine which ones warrant investigation. Those that do, must be done within 48 hours (at least in my state). They do need a judge to approve a court order to remove someone. This can be done by phone and doesn't require a trial. Again, this is how it works in my state. Laws vary on this state to state.
