5. The military does not have the right to take your 'personal school records
The school must provide name and address information. While, yes, that is reason for concern, it is not your entire file.

BTW, this type of registry information was always available to recruiters. A part of NCLB, however, requires that schools make it avaiable, as in the past some schools would refuse.

6. Parents of school aged kids, PLEASE do this
You HAVE TO BE PROACTIVE on this. There are some around here who have insisted the schools cannot release info on their kids without their permission. The opposite is true; YOU have to sign papers and file with the schools to prevent the information release. Without this, schools are required by NCLB law to give info on your kids to military recruiters.

Hey, most kids and 'rents have some bumpy days during the teen years. The military knows this and they are legally entitled to court your kids during the bumpy years WITHOUT YOUR CONSENT unless you sign papers denying them access.

They can start private talks with your kids at age 16. They can make promises and offers without your knowledge and input with your own kids. Do not find out on their 18th birthday that they have signed on the dotted line after 24 months of being aggressively courted by recruiters!

If you do not sign the papers and go on record with your schools, your children's private contact info WILL BE made available to the guys assigned to procure cannon fodder.

7. "This is endorsed by Mike Moore, so it should be ok."
Not to rain on your parade, but what's the difference between that phrase and if someone on the right side of the aisle were to say "this is endorsed by Rush Limbaugh, so it should be ok?"

I'm not questioning that it's okay -- as a matter of fact, the right to opt out is in the language (see below) -- just questioning your proposition that it's okay because it's endorsed by one individual.

‘‘SEC. 9528. ARMED FORCES RECRUITER ACCESS TO STUDENTS AND
‘‘STUDENT RECRUITING INFORMATION.
‘‘(a) POLICY.—
‘‘(1) ACCESS TO STUDENT RECRUITING INFORMATION.—Notwithstanding
section 444(a)(5)(B) of the General Education
Provisions Act and except as provided in paragraph (2), each
local educational agency receiving assistance under this Act
shall provide, on a request made by military recruiters or
an institution of higher education, access to secondary school
students names, addresses, and telephone listings.
‘‘(2) CONSENT.—A secondary school student or the parent
of the student may request that the student’s name, address,
and telephone listing described in paragraph (1) not be released
without prior written parental consent, and the local educational
agency or private school shall notify parents of the
option to make a request and shall comply with any request.’’

Here's a link to the .pdf file of the law

Section 9528 is on page 559.

8. Make Extra Copies
I got every parent of a teenager in my housing complex (140 units) to sign off before this school year. Now, when I see recruiters in the neighborhood I can cuss them out with knowledge that all potential young recruits have been placed on their do not contact list. I mailed the forms myself. I had to do that just once, on Christmas Eve. They have not been back. I called the recruiter's cell phone and his supervisor. Stake out your piece of America--
peace

11. Thank You Jack! I was looking for this form the other day.
My friend has a son who will be a Sophomore next year and she MUST fill this out. I will make a copy for my son too, but he's only 12. Should I have this put in my son's school records now? Do they start this young?
