Southern fundies at it AGAIN:Theatres pulling volcano movie over evolution
Edited on Tue Mar-22-05 08:32 PM by Bluebear
There they go again. What's ironic is many of these IMAX theatres are connected with SCIENCE museums.

====

The IMAX theaters in Myrtle Beach, Charleston and several others in the South have passed on showing a science film on volcanoes because of concerns it might offend those with fundamental religious beliefs.

"We've got to pick a film that's going to sell in our area. If it's not going to sell, we're not going to take it," said Lisa Buzzelli, director of the IMAX theater in Charleston. "Many people here believe in creationism, not evolution."

Buzzelli said while the Charleston theater doesn't rule out showing "Volcanoes of the Deep Sea" in the future, she considers people's religious views when showing films. The film makes a connection between human DNA and microbes inside undersea volcanoes. Buzzelli said the handling of evolution was considered in her decision.

IMAX theaters in Texas, Georgia and the Carolinas have declined to show the film, said Pietro Serapiglia who handles distribution for Stephen Low, the film's director and producer who is from Montreal. "I find it's only in the South," Serapiglia said.

1. wow
can't show anything that might step on the toes of ignorant rednecks fragile little fantasies. Maybe if these people were shown how much evidence there is supporting evolution, macro and micro, they wouldn't keep hammering away at Darwin, they'd realize he only made physical observations, the first steps, therefore the most simplistic.

I get so frustrated with the ignorant claims made against science and evolution, the only reason these people know nothing is because they don't seek knowledge out, and none seeps in b/c people like these IMAX people don't want to step on toes.

10. You can go to the theater
seperate from the museam. At the one in Raleigh has played things such as the Tom Hanks Christmas movie (where he is the train). Presumedly that didn't have much to do with science.

15. Still, I'd think that any good fundie
would stay FAR away from anything science-related. And if you knew you they were showing a movie on the beginnings of planet Earth, it's kind of clear that there are going to be some elements that fundmentalists have a problem with.

17. My problem is now NO ONE can see it
Because the fundamentalist "might be offended" by a movie. Maybe there should be warning signs, "Danger! Evolution discussed! XXX!"

18. Of course.
We never heard about people talk about taking The Passion out of theaters because it might offend athiests.

If you don't like what a movie says, DON'T SEE IT. No one's twisting your arm.

12. What are they afraid of, converts?
When I went through religious school the teacher said that the "seven days" it took to create the universe was a metaphor, and that a day could be 100,000 years to God.

I have a hard time believing most of these anti-evolution fundies ever visit science museums in the first place, much less the IMAX's in them.
