Sen Santorum rethinks death penalty stance
http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/05081/475366.stm

A new poll showing that Catholics are backing off support for the death penalty was no surprise to U.S. Sen. Rick Santorum, an outspoken conservative Catholic, who says he has been re-examining his own view.

He has not become an abolitionist, and he believes church teaching against the death penalty carries less weight than its longer-standing opposition to abortion. But he questions what he once unquestioningly supported.

"I felt very troubled about cases where someone may have been convicted wrongly. DNA evidence definitely should be used when possible," he said.

"I agree with the pope that in the civilized world ... the application of the death penalty should be limited. I would definitely agree with that. I would certainly suggest there probably should be some further limits on what we use it for."

Edited on Tue Mar-22-05 08:12 PM by SoCalDem
He's "movin' on left" to the "good side"..but only metaphorically...as soon as he gets re-elected, he'll strip down to his mean ole self again.. The repubes know this,, they take it with a "wink-wink", because they know it takes a "lotta cheatin' & lyin' to git ulected"..

He's going after as many good-intentioned, but gillible moderates who wnat to believe that even HE has a good side..:(

8. Yup
after being reminded (well after the election) of the RCCs stance on the death penalty by the powers that be, the Catholic electorate suddenly once again becomes a hot prospect for Santorum. Oh no! I might find myself on the wrong side of this one... better start hedging.

He's such a fraud.

2. Wow, I'm really impressed!
I am VERY surprised that he was able to take his mind off of Man on Dog sex to actually think about another profound issue.

Maybe he's more versatile than I originally gave him credit for!

6. He felt very troubled? What about outrage? What about it shouldn't
happen where we have put ourselves in position of taking a life period.

9. I thought that was strange, too
"troubled" -- as in conflicted? As if an innocent person on death row is something one should have *questions* about?

The man is sick.
