and a new feature, the Republicans who should be given a (slight) break because for ohnce they bucked the system and voted for what was right rather than for expedience when dealing with the chimperor:

McCain (R-AZ)
Smith (R-OR)
Snowe (R-ME)

Expect all seven of these individuals to be targeted for termination in their next primary by the RNC.

...for voting to block the "Clear Skies" Act (choke on that, Mr. Orwell) in the Environment & Public Works Committee last week. The Democrats on that committee held firm, and Jeffords voted with them, but they couldn't have done it without one R crossing the aisle, and he did. Chafee took the biggest risk there. He's good on the environment for a Repub.

The people in my Congressional District kept reelecting a very nice Repub who often voted with Dems. FINALLY, we liberal Dems understood that although she often voted the way we wanted, she ALWAYS voted for the Repubs to lead the House. (She would also vote with the Repubs against our interests if the vote was close and the Repubs needed her vote to pass a bill.)

I think Rhode Island would elect a Dem senator because Dems represent the interests of Rhode Islanders better than Repubs.

It's time for Chafee to come over to the good side or to face a strong Dem challenger.

It just seems striking in his case because so many don't!

Oh, I absolutely agree that he should either come over or be replaced; that caucus majority would be VERY nice to have, and RI is pretty damn blue; it's perfectly doable if a good Dem candidate comes up and I hope it happens.

But that doesn't mean that in the meantime, we can't thank him when he helps us on important issues, as he did here. That helps us too indirectly because every call, every e-mail reinforces the meme that the American people WANT environmental protections, they WANT strict pollution control. I'm just saying that this was an easy vote for him. It wasn't an easy vote for all of the Dems who voted against drilling.

Since the Repubs have knocked off so many of our guys for doing the right thing, I think it's only fair to claim the seat for a an actual Dem, be it Chaffee who switches or a Dem who challenges him.

This was an incredible disappointment to me, but you can't go kingmaking and pauperizing senators based on one vote. It is silly and irresponsible. This vote doesn't make Norm Coleman a bastion of liberal thought, nor does it make Akaka and Inouye as bad as the senators who vote for this sort of shit on a consistent basis. It's fucking terrible, but I just hate this "here's the vote du jour for black and white labeling of congresspeople" mentality on DU.

...Snowe (especially) and Collins WILL be challenged in the primaries, but not strongly. Unfortunately, I also have a hard time seeing a D who can present a serious challenge (I PRAY that I'm wrong).

I hear a very slight buzz that Collins may challenge Gov. Baldacci next year. Ifso, it has to be because she wants to get the hell away from a senate where she doesn't count and does not have the backbone to stand up to the halliburton administration in any EFFECTIVE way.
