It's still about civil rights
We've allowed the GOP to move things away from civil rights for Americans over the last two decades. The Democratic party has been conceived as the party of the people because we were the party of the Civil Rights Act, the Voting Act of 1965 that gave African Americans the right to vote, Social Security, Medicare and on and on.

Lately I've seen a lot of letters to the editors, guests on political talk shows, etc that are trying to get the message out that the GOP is the party for blacks in America. This is a blatant lie and we can't allow them to perpetrate this fraud on our country.

It's estimated that 13 million kids live below the poverty line, many of them black and hispanic. It's estimated that up to seven million Americans have lost healthcare during Bush's terms, many of them black and hipanic.

The income differential between blacks and whites is now at its highest in twenty years. A higher percentage of blacks live below the poverty line than any other race. Yet the GOP refuses to raise the minimum wage. Why?

Dr King's dream is not yet a reality. Blacks and whites are not equals in this country. They should be. The laws dictate that they be treated equally. Yet we read of voter suppression of African Americans in Florida. We read of voter purges in Ohio and Florida based on race.

There has been a recent surge in the number of churches and ministers attacking the Bush administration's treatment of the poor and needy in this country. We can beat the GOP if we return to what we do best, which is represent the people.

We need to work at combatting the GOP's attempts to convince minorities that the Democratic party has abandoned them while at the same time the GOP is doing everything they can to destroy programs that would benefit Americans of all colors such as public education, medicare, medicaid, and on and on.

We need to start working towards true equality in America, and if we can get the churches behind us we can win. All social changes in America have had the churches as a force to move them forward, from Civil Rights, to Women's Suffrage, to Child Labor Laws. We need to start looking out for the people who need help and leave the corporations to the GOP.

That's just my opinion and I'm sticking by it.
