the average church-goer' book was Bishop Robinson's book Honest to God....the conservative 'fight back' book was For Christ's sake

since it was a discussion rather than a story, maybe it was less 'striking'?

1. Honest to God was a terrific book.
It's responsible for me deciding I could stay in Christianity.

Actually, there were a lot of sort-of theological books published in the 60's that were in the news, and had wide readership. It was a creative time for mainstream churches intellectually as well as on social justice issues.

Now, I'm still trying to figure out how we went from that situation to the one today, especially re the media. Today, the only time the MSM cover liberal--or even moderate--Christianity is when there are stories about pedophile priests, a gay bishop, or something similar. Non wonder the term "Christian" is becoming synonomous with fundamentalist.
