They say it isn't compensation for killing a loved one. And they are also insistant that the payments do not admit guilt or culpability...and yet Iraqi's recieve an estimated $2500 dollars from the US military when a member of their family are killed by US troops.
It is called condolences payments, started in 2003. A father, son, brother is worth $2500 in the eyes of the US. No - an IRAQI life is worth $2500.
I read the article linked below -
http://fairuse.1accesshost.com/news2/latimes560.htmlLife is cheap after all. We treasure it, relish it, and there are those that think it is God's gift to us all....and uncle Sam will give you $2500 if one of his troops mistakenly kill your father, son, brother, sister, mother.
And yet, there are those in government who blithely state that they will fight until the ends of the earth for the rights of the unborn child....but once your born...too bad sucka - your life is worth $2500.
Seems to me that there is something fundamentally wrong with this picture. Seems to me that the love of money is trully the root of all evil - and for anyone to put a monetary value on life itself is obscene. It is callous, and goes to show how far we have fallen, how cheaply we regard other peoples. I am not sure the article was intended to make that impression.
