A former campaign worker for U.S. Sen. Joe Biden, D-Del., was sentenced in federal court today to three years and one month in prison for stealing more than $412,000 from the senator.

Roger D. Blevins of Elsmere was accused of raiding Biden’s re-election fund to pay for dates with, and buy lavish presents for, performers on a gay pornographic Web site.

with the laxest corporate laws. If you can't have an off-shore business, or must have a US business address, Delaware is where you incorporate. For a little state, it has an incredibly disproportionate number of corporations based there. It's probably a hub for the corporate porn industry.

So if this is a criminal case is the court documents open to the public? Be nice to know which porno web site, name of company, location. And was is only Blevins or was Biden involved? Is that why he wasn't interested in signing the petition to find out more about Guckert? What other strange voting has Biden been doing lately?

When was this former staffer charged? This seems to come up out of the blue. Note how it always seems to be the staffer, and not the elected official, who gets caught. I'd be curious to see a correlation between Biden's voting behaviour and the charging of his staffer.

Roger D. Blevins III acknowledged Wednesday in federal court he had betrayed the trust of U.S. Sen. Joseph R. Biden Jr. by bilking his Democratic patron out of more than $400,000 in campaign funds.

Blevins, a familiar behind-the-scenes figure in Democratic Party circles, was functioning as an assistant campaign treasurer when he siphoned off Biden's accounts for a spending spree on people he met on the Internet as well as on luxury items, including a Porsche, a BMW convertible, a plasma-screen television, trips to Florida and other travel expenses, according to federal prosecutors.

In a short proceeding before U.S. District Judge Gregory M. Sleet, Blevins pleaded guilty to two felony counts, the first for interstate transfer of stolen property for wiring money out of state and the second for aiding and abetting the making of a false statement by filing a federal campaign finance report that covered up the looting.

Blevins was arrested in July after the funds were discovered missing from Biden's accounts. In a recent filing with the Federal Election Commission, the campaign reported a balance of $323,637 as of Dec. 31, and Biden's office appeared not to want to dwell on the episode.

John T. Dorsey, the senator's former state director who is now a lawyer with Young Conaway Stargatt & Taylor, was in court to monitor the proceedings but not to talk about it. Margaret Aitken, the press secretary for Biden, simply said in a telephone interview, "We're happy to see this will soon be resolved."

A man who served as a campaign aide to Sen. Joseph R. Biden Jr. pleaded guilty in federal court Wednesday to stealing money from the Delaware Democrat's campaign treasury, apparently to promote what he hoped would be a romantic relationship with at least one of three men.
Roger D. Blevins III, 33, pleaded guilty in Wilmington, Del., to one count of interstate transportation of stolen property and one count of aiding and abetting the making of a false statement to the government, the Associated Press reports.
Blevins faces a maximum 15 years in prison and $500,000 in fines. He will be sentenced June 18.
Blevins, former assistant treasurer for Citizens for Biden, pleaded guilty to transferring $80,000 from Mr. Biden's campaign treasury to a credit union in Florida in April, the largest of 23 unauthorized transfers cited by prosecutors.
According to prosecutors, Blevins improperly transferred or withdrew almost $400,000 from Mr. Biden's account in 2002 and 2003.
Some money went to the bank accounts of three men in Florida whom Blevins met on the Internet, prosecutors said.
"He apparently was forming or hopeful of a romantic relationship with one or more of the individuals," prosecutor April Byrd said.

"When it rains, it pours," Guckert said Friday from his Washington home. He would not comment further.

According to court records, Guckert owed $9,484 in taxes; $7,697.69 in fines and $3,560.71 in interest.

The judgment, which was filed Oct. 18, 1996, said interest would continue to accrue at a rate of 1 percent a month on the unpaid balance, and the penalty would accrue at 0.5 percent on the tax.

Carter said he is prohibited by law from telling how much Guckert has paid of the judgment, if any.

U.S. District Judge Kent A. Jordan sentenced the former staffer, 34-year-old Roger D. Blevins III, of Elsmere, to three years and one month in prison for stealing more than $412,000.

The one-time assistant campaign manager for Biden spent the senator's money "to fund his own fantasy life," Assistant U.S. Attorney April Byrd said.

Blevins spent the money on three individuals he met through a gay pornographic Web site, where visitors could watch and interact with the performers in Florida. The site's slogan, at the time of Blevins' arrest, was "One house with five guys and 15 cameras."
