A Bunch More Video Of Police Intimidation Of Protesters In NJ on Friday!!!
Edited on Thu Mar-10-05 07:28 AM by DistressedAmerican
Prepare yourself to be irritated!!!

As I had promised, here is an additional 8 or so minutes of the police actions from Bush's Social Security Townhall meeting in Westfield NJ on Friday. Sorry for the delay. Illness and tech issues slowed down the posting.

The video shows two additional arrests, as well as, several minutes of the police dispersing the protesters with threats of more arrests. Note in particular how the crowd is calm and peaceful UNTIL the police begin using intimidation tactics. Also of note: The old lady coming out of the event that stickes her tongue out at the protesters at the beginning of the clip. More importantly notice the sheer number of fiot ops on the scene. A Police State existed in Westfield that day.

You will here my sister throughout challenging the actions of the police. Go Distressed Sister!

For those of you that haven't been following my posts on this issue, the full story can be found posted with the pics and video at my website:
http://www.seedsofdoubt.com/distressedamerican/main.htm
===================================================
The NEW 8 minute video can be found here:
http://www.seedsofdoubt.com/distressedamerican/westfieldvideo/WestfieldPoliceState.AVI
===================================================
The original video of Emily Colvin and "Kid With Mohawk" can be viewed here:

http://www.seedsofdoubt.com/distressedamerican/westfieldvideo/WestfieldArrest.avi

http://www.seedsofdoubt.com/distressedamerican/westfieldvideo/WestfieldArrest.mpg
====================================================
Let me know if you have any issues viewing the files. They were being a bit glichy this morning but, I think it is my computer rather than an issue with the video clips.

So what do YOU think, Justified? Or outright intimidation of protesters? I say the latter!

This is important video folks. Please take the time to check it out!!!

These are the same tactics that are being used to neutralize protesters at Anti-Bush events. The charges are being fought by the accused. We are trying to apply maximum pressure to the local establishment.

Help spread this info around, Please!

2. The new 8-minute video loads, but
when it plays, I only get audio and no video. Could you post a Quicktime or Windows Media Player version? Seems AVI won't work with a Mac.

3. My sister is working on a Quicktime version today.
I will get it posted in a couple of hours. Right now she is transfering an mpeg version but that is going very slowly. I'll get all of the versions up ASAP. Sorry for the delay. Please check back.

7. I Added A Reduced Length Quicktime Video Clip
The MPEG is still coming but, it is HUGE and taking quite a while to get uploaded to my server. Hope this helps.

This clip features the arrival of additional officers clad in riot gear and the crowd response to the show of force.

Clip here For this clip:

Let me know if you are still having trouble viewing it.

I must admit here, this is pretty much the first time I've really dealt with editing and posting video clips. Pardon the learning curve...

6. I Forgot To Mention That I Have Spoken To Emily Colvin's Father.
Edited on Thu Mar-10-05 10:26 AM by DistressedAmerican
The hearing on her disorderly conduct charge is March 32rd. The lawyer they have hired thinks it is very likely that the charges will be dropped but, says they do not have that good of a case for a civil suit against the police. That info came in before I got this video. Hopefully, the context provided by the tape will change his mind on that.

The best way to keep ourselves from being abused by law enforcement is to document their every action and put the pressure (legal, media, etc) on them to end these practices.

If you are going out to an event, try to get video. Photos are useful but, do not make very convincing court evidence at they are out of context. A good video like this one can be far more effective defense for protesters that are wrongly accused. It is also compelling evidence in the case that the officers involved are ever "brought to justice".

Another suggestion, the protesters at this rally were dispersed in a matter of minutes. I think if everyone had sat peacefully down where they stood and waited to be arrested, the incident would have gotten media attention. We need to recall how these battles have been waged successfully for decades by crowds practicing civil disobedience. It is easier to ignore nine arrests than it is to ignore 300.

I agree. If they get pissed off: so what! On this other board I go on someone said protestors should be silent and they were annoying. :eyes:
That really pissed me off of course. This is wrong to arrest people for no reason. And I noticed in the first video you showcased the girl video taping was yelling how a republican stepped over the line and wasn't being arrested. :argh:

14. No effort was made at all to control the Repugs coming out of the event.
They were not kept behind any police lines, they were not told to leave the area or be arrested. The police never even looked back at them. Apparently "peace" protesters are the real threat!

30. My question is...why would the police be so "pro-Bush?" He sold
them out on the new budget. When we attended the Jazz Funeral, the NO police seem to know that. They were quite friendly. (Of course, we got the "how to act" speech before we left the park.

9. This Video is Uncut - SOOOO Many Police!
I am "Distressed Sister" who shot this video, downloaded it to my PC and uploaded it to the Distressed American Website. This video is just as it was in my camera - 7 1/2 minutes of something I honestly thought I would never see here in Westfield. It's uncut and unedited.

I've had it with Bush using NYC/NJ for his political gain! And when I went to say something about it, I was part of a group that was treated as "guilty until proven innocent" while the Bushies were "protected" from us. Who is doing the damage?!?!?!?!

These arrests were all of young people, 16 - 20 years old who posed no threat to other members of the protest group, the Republicans streaming out of the armory or the police. Then they suddenly and forcibly dispersed the protest. We just wanted to be heard but we were herded off like cattle instead. After I finished shooting this, the cops continued to follow me and force me to move away from the protest for several blocks.

The First Amendment is in trouble in Westfield, NJ!

So very good to have you here! I love seeing families get active.

Your vids tell a story to those of us willing to look and listen without bias. That story has no good ending.

I sincerely hope that many others follow your lead, with cams being numerous at protests. All law enforcement officials should want these kind of cops outted from their ranks.

Thank you again, for trying to save this country.

16. Getting the Evidence Out There
Thanks for the warm welcome! The Westfield protest was not my first, nor will it be my last. I was out every evening when the RNC invaded and exploited NYC for the convention spectacle. The police muscle was everywhere then and I even had a friend picked up for "walking while being a naturalized citizen". (When they realized that he hadn't committed any crime, they simply let him out of the van in which they had forced him to ride - 20 blocks away from the protest!)

I am tired of police keeping protesters separated into pods, corralled into "zones" and continuously intimidated. People need to see that Free Speech is being disregarded. The media isn't covering this nearly enough. Let's blog them out!

21. Look and Listen - Police Intimidation!
It's been a challenge managing these big files and uploading them over DSL. The 7 1/2 minute file is over 500 Mb in MPEG format, best in AVI format at like 115 Mb.

I think the key to getting more people to successfully see them is to give some shorter clips, still not changed in any way, but just excepted from the 7 1/2 minutes. I am almost done sending all versions one excerpted clip (like 1 1/2 minutes)to the Distressed American Server. I have another excerpt already saved and will upload it next. Thanks for kicking!

22. I can upload to the usenet
but I doubt many are geeky enough to use that.

Hmmm, but a lot of geeks would get to see it that way .......

It's customary to include an info file with such posts.

My questions for you:

Would you mind if I uploaded this to the usenet?

If so, what title would you like the video to have?

Would you like a link to your website in the info? Bear in mind there are a lot of virulent repukes who would be reading it and presumably some don't shirk from going as far as to attempt an illegal hijacking or DOS attack. Simply scheduling multiple downloads of your videos could cripple your servers.

Bearing in mind the above is there any other info you would like included?

Should/May I copy and paste info ripped from your site? I wouldn't post a link with that unless you were sure you wanted me to.

Are there any copyright issues I should be aware of and mention with the accompanying file?

My skills are limited but please don't hesitate to request an upload to the usenet of any future videos.

My sis maned the files Westfield Arrest and Westfield Police State. I'll keep you posted as we get the rest of the editing dealt with.

Run with it. Thanks for the interest.

For the interest, I just got off of the phone with the Colvin family and they really appreciate all the help. May people have come forward with great accounts. It looks very good that the charges will be dropped. We are also doing a pretty good job embarassing the local establishment with this material.

I'll hopefully be able to post the relevant download information before very long.

The usenet has frequent hiccups but I'm reasonably confident I can have at least one file uploaded before tomorrow.

28. Looks Like The Pressure Is Working.
The Police Chief of Westfield was forced to respond to allegations that his force acted inappropriately toward protesters. Keep the pressure on people. We are making them feel the heat. From today's Westfield Leader:

http://www.goleader.com/05mar10/05mar10.pdf

Se the headline story on the protest on the front page AND DO NOT MISS the police chief trying to cover his ass in the article on page 10 (the second page in the pdf, Center of Page). Police Chief blames the protestors and defends his fine department's actions. PURE LIES people!

PLEASE READ THIS BOGUS ASS ARTICLE BY Paul Peyton! Apparently the protesters made someone's kids cry. We're bad, bad people. They claim to be looking for policew video of the incidents. THEY SHOULD HAVE ANY VIDEO THEY TOOK. WHY WOULD THEY BE "LOOKING"? Because they do not exist.

We have them worried. We're going to get these charges dropped and the local politicians are in line for a good grilling.

32. MORE VIDEO IS READY!!
Edited on Thu Mar-10-05 09:16 PM by DistressedAmerican
This is a shortened version of the beginning of the longer clip. It should be more manageable. It begins with an old lady coming out of the event sticking her tongue out at the protesters. It moves to the arrest of another of the "minors" who was held down on the ground eliciting chants of "POLICE BRUTALITY" and "LAND OF THE FREE" from the protesters. It ends with an officers shoving The kid into the arrest van. A the end of the clip, one protester notes that the police have their badge numbers covered, a comment that results in chants of "What's Your Badge Number!" from Distressed Sister.

44. Being posted to the Usenet now
I retitled the large mpeg, WestfieldPoliceState.mpg, and then created a segmented archive of it using WinRAR. I then created a recovery volume and began posting it.

WESTFIELD_POLICE_SWARM_BUSH_PROTESTORS.part01.rar

is the first file of the .rar set.

WESTFIELD_POLICE_SWARM_BUSH_PROTESTORS.txt

contains the info.

WESTFIELD_POLICE_SWARM_BUSH_PROTESTORS.par2

is the first of .par (repair files) set, the rest of the .pars will come after all the .rars go up. I'm posting quite a few and have even more in reserve if needed.

For the text file I included the link to http://www.wnbc.com/news/4255371/detail.html

as well as the article itself.

Here's the text I appended to the beginning.

"WESTFIELD_POLICE_SWARM_BUSH_PROTESTORS.mpg

Very up close, very personal.

477 MB, 704x480 ( 720x480 SDE <sequence display extension> ). DVD quality, super high bitrate. Shot on the scene by one of the protestors. AC3 2 channel audio, 384 kb/s (very clear).

1.333 (4:3) aspect ratio.

Length: 00:07:30

Pics/Frames/sec: 29.970

Fields/sec: 59.939"

The binary newsgroups I posted it to: alt.binaries.divx (whoops, that was a mistake, I was originally going to upload a DivX encode I made)
alt.binaries.documentaries
and
alt.binaries.multimedia.documentaries

I was a frustrated in my attempts to do a really high quality DivX encode that would also meet the standard for file size that I was going for.

I basically felt that if I couldn't get the size down to one half of the original mpeg's with no discernible quality loss I shouldn't bother.

I won't bore you with the details but I couldn't crack the nut on this one. The original mpeg has a very high bitrate so that might have been a factor.

I might give the .wmv format a whirl tomorrow.

I regret not getting this uploaded sooner. I'll take a stab at the other files "tomorrow" (after I get up). :)

P.S.: I looked for a political newsgroup that was also a binary (supports more than just text messages) one but to no avail.

I could have posted to alt.binaries.multimedia but, trust me on this, that group is getting overloaded with headers (don't ask) and a) The video freaks who frequent that group probably wouldn't appreciate the post. b) You would need a huge amount of patience just getting that group to load in your binary newsgroup reader.

The documentary groups usually have a lot of political stuff in them. They won't be too put off by seeing an upload that isn't, in the usual sense, strictly a documentary.

Lol, if they can live with all those shameless porn adverts that infest the newsgroups they can live with this.

50. Thanks very much
Even though I have this digital camera, I've never had to share footage on the net until this scene happened. I've had more than a few technical setbacks over the last week. Good to have an expert picking it and getting it out!

52. My pleasure though ....
I'm far from being the video guru I would one day like to be. :)

I'm just a construction worker waiting for the call to go back to work who does this as a hobby.

You did a great job with the camera btw.

I have some online compadres who might be able to help out with any easy questions regarding digital video recording. I have no experience with that as yet.

47. It takes time to download them
Please be patient. Don't start with one of the long (8 min) clips. The others are all 1 - 2 minutes but still there will be a decent lag between clicking and watching. Sorry about that. Wanted to publish only unaltered video and the files are all very large.

48. Did you try going to the homepage and pulling them from there?
http://www.seedsofdoubt.com/distressedamerican/main.htm

I don't know if it will help. There seems to be a great deal of variability in who can view what. I do know that everything should work. Every file has been viewed by someone that has confirmed it works. Noone seems to be able to view all of the different formats, myself included. oddly. I can view some on my desktop and others on my laptop. I assume it has to do with the codecs available for everyone's individual video players.

Try the site again and see if there are versions there you can see. If not, I'm kind of stymied. Thanks for being interested though.

51. Ah, I was waiting to see if the MP4 format ...
Edited on Fri Mar-11-05 03:02 PM by Babel_17
was going to be a problem for anyone.

Quicktime (.mov) files can be a problem for some people too depending on the version.

MPEG-2 files require a decoder to be available. Windows doesn't come with one.

Your .avi/MP4 encode plays fine for me but was encoded using tools I'm not familiar with, OpenDML (AVI v2.0) seems to be the container. You used PCM audio for it which is fine but it is a totally uncompressed format and takes up much more file size than you need it to. MP3 is fine for a DivX, just use a decently high bitrate like 128 kb/s.

The good news is that there are at least two freeware players available that should handle them.

With both of them you just extract them to a folder, there is no installation as such.

I would say that of those two the VLC player is the easiest to use.

Here's a link to the latest nightly build.

http://vthr.via.ecp.fr/~videolan/build/win32/vlc-win32-last.zip

That link will always get you the latest (beta-windows) build. For earlier builds go here.

http://vthr.via.ecp.fr/~videolan/build/win32/

The home site is here.

http://www.videolan.org/

The link for the latest non-beta windows version is here.

http://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-windows.html

Some may prefer it as it comes with an installer and might be more stable.

I don't use it as it is a bit slower and I need some of the very advanced streaming functions that only are available with the nightlies.

I just now tested the latest nightly with the large mpeg and the short DivX. It worked with both.

Well, I'm going to try downloading some other segments and I'm going to give the re-encode of the large mpeg another shot.

My upload of the mpeg is complete and I just checked that it went up ok. It did, there were no incompletes, and now I just downloaded all the files and the video extracted ok. :)

If anyone calls out for more .pars I'll upload them.

P.S. I'm going to test my DVD authoring software with the large mpeg. I think it should be compatible with no intermediate steps needed.

That could be a useful way of sending out your videos to various types in the media.

Almost everyone knows how to throw a DVD in a home player.

but I'm doing very little in comparison to you and your sister.

I sent you a personal message with my e-mail addy in case down the road I might be able to do you or your sister some small service.

I get fairly caught up in my job when work picks up but I should always be available to do the types of things I've done in this thread.

You'll probably encounter some truly knowledgeable types as you continue.

There are a lot of peeps out there with a very high level of technical expertise. Should you hook up with some of them they can probably help you in ways I can only dream of.

But don't let me distract you with any geek-speak :), it's the content, the story you have to tell, that matters.

Edit: The large mpeg was accepted by my DVD authoring software and it burnt a DVD folder to disk with it that played back fine with my software (PowerDVD) player.

I'll burn it to disk later and check in my home player.

I used the software provided with my Sony Handycam DVD, ImageMixer to capture the video and output MPG. I then used VideoImpression (provided by Cannon) to convert from MPG to AVI and from MPG to MOV.

I figured you were using your hardware's default software.

It did a great job.

I recently remembered some of the advice I once read regarding encoding.

It was explained, IIRC, that evey Windows setup can handle mpeg-1 (VCD) encodes. It's an old format and quite ubiquitous.

I think Mac/Apple computers and also Linux setups handle that format too.

It doesn't do a great job with todays highly detailed videos but when it comes to bang for the buck on encodes that are shooting for small file sizes it's not bad at all.

Another advantage besides wide, near universal, compatability is that the cpu requirements for playback are very, very, low.

I'm currently doing such a re-encode of the mpeg using some noise reducing filters in an attempt to get better image quality out of that format. The audio should be quite good.

If the results are decent I'll upload it to the documentary newsgroups.

The file size will be small, about 76.1 MB.

Ah, I did some googling.

"Well, the primary advantage is that MPEG-1 plays on more or less any computer, PC, Macintosh, Solaris box, VAX and many, many others."

http://www.animemusicvideos.org/guides/avtechold/video4_2.htm

<snip> Benefits: MPEG1 was the codec which made distributable digital video happen. MPEG could be streamed, stored on CDs - you could do all sorts of stuff with it. Even today it is still a very viable compression algorithm. You can play MPEG movies on almost anything, from settop players, to PCs, to handhelds running PocketPC! That's pretty darn impressive!

Disadvantages: MPEG1 is old, lets make no bones about it. It's still damn good, and it beats out everything else in terms of compatibility, but in terms of technical quality there are better things out there. In order to get a good picture, it does require more bits/second than other codecs.

Recommendations: MPEG1, while it won't make the smallest files, is the KING in terms of compatibility. If you want everything under the sun to be able to play your AMVs, distribute in 352x240 MPEG1 files. Otherwise, I'd stay away from it. <snip>

<snip> Benefits: MPEG2 gives better picture quality than MPEG1 at full CCIR 601 resolution (720x480) and at comparable bitrate. Basically, MPEG2 scales, while MPEG1 doesn't.

Disadvantages: MPEG2 takes more CPU horsepower to decompress, and basically has no advantage over MPEG1 at lower resolutions. If you're distributing for the web, you're not going to want to be compressing stuff in MPEG2 instead of MPEG1 because the benefits of MPEG2 aren't realized until you get into full TV resolution, which means big filesizes.

Recommendation: If you're creating your own high-quality archival backups of your videos, I would encode them at DVD-quality MPEG2, but I would never use MPEG2 for online distribution. <snip>

Edit: I forgot to mention something. If the mpeg-1 encode is done under the guidelines for VCD compatability then the resulting encode can be burnt to CD as a VCD and should play in almost all home DVD players, even the "finicky" ones like some Sonys.

Ahead software's Nero Burning Rom is pretty easy to use with them.

How to better document police intimidation, how to resist police intimidation AND how to compress video.

Let me know how those noise filters work out. May be better video for the court case!

59. Interesting, I'll test burn the DVD I compiled now.
Edited on Fri Mar-11-05 09:10 PM by Babel_17
Ok, I'm uploading that hopefully VCD compliant mpeg-1 now. I should have burnt it to CD myself before uploading but I didn't think of it till now.

G-Spot* says it's VCD compliant but the proof is in the pudding.

*http://www.headbands.com/gspot/ Fwiw, most people use the beta.

It came out pretty good imo.

Like before, I'm uploading it to alt.binaries.documentaries and alt.binaries.multimedia.documentaries

I corrected my mis-spelling of "protesters" in the last upload. The header to look for with this one is WESTFIELD_POLICE_SWARM_BUSH_PROTESTERS_MPEG-1

I included the same link and copy and paste as the previous upload. The only new info I added was this.

"Here's a much more compressed mpeg-1 version of the video previously posted. It's being uploaded in this format to help with distribution and to provide maximum playback compatability.

File size of the extracted .mpg should be 76.0 MB (79,692,284 bytes).

Length is the same as the previous, larger, file, 00:07:37."

According to my posting utility my upload should be done at around 10:30 PM EST.

I'm off now to do some test burns of the DVD and VCD.

Thanks for the opportunity to put to good use skills normally reserved for more frivolous tasks. :)

Lol, there's a new Matrix parody I have to go view now.

Whoops, almost forgot, here's a link to a MS proggie that can give you some info on your systems mpeg capabilities and a method to switch which codecs WMP should prefer.

61. There's a lot to this subject
I think I know where to find some good links that explain it.

I learned through some very messy trial and error but there are easier ways.

Mmmmm, for starters you'll probably want this piece of freeware.

1.5.1 ßeta (build 888)

http://www.shemes.com/index.php?p=download

Downloading headers can suck up an ungodly amount of system memory and swap file space and tie up your cpu for quite a while.

Even with a gig of memory the largest newsgroups are a fierce challenge to browse.

http://docs.newzbin.com/UsenetTutorials

The above has good links. http://www.slyck.com/ng.php being among the best.

Don't worry if you only have 512 megs of ram. The newsgroups I posted to are nowhere near as daunting as the largest ones.

Some people prefer Newsleecher. They offer a free trial.

I find GrabIt to be more intuitive to use. And it's free. :)

63. Ok, both the DVD
and the VCD burns went well and played fine in my home DVD player.

But some DVD players are finicky so I can't swear as to universal compatability.

My upload is going well and should be done soon.

Anything particular you would like uploaded next?

I'm thinking of taking another stab at encoding a DivX.

This time I'll resize it to 352x240 and see what I get.

65. OK now I'm really shocked
I just got off the phone with a friend and he said he was there the whole time. He certainly did not used to be the type to join a protest! I am so proud of him. He is going to call me later and give e a full report -- you must already have one from your "Distressed Sister!" Unbelievable.

I'm still waiting for the video to download, I hope I can view it -- the only video format that seems to work for me is Windows Media. I have a hard time with Quicktime and Real Player -- they freeze up all the time.

Distressed, would it be okay if I PM'd you?
