The hour long tribute to Dan Rather was so good, I cried my eyes out...
I had no clue how awesome he was, from civil rights, to watergate, to Iran Contra, it was all so good. I teared up so many times.

I cheered when he grilled presidential nominee George Senior on Iran Contra, god it was beautiful.

Damn! kick for Dan Rather, you will be missed, and unlike the sea of RW corporate asshole, you were a good reporter.

:kick:

2. Yep. One of the last to actually practice something called 'journalism.'
and they f•••••g hated him for it, and they got his head on a platter for it.
I still think he was set up. They are gloating in the WH tonight.
Bastards.

3. Dan Rather was right about alot of things, he is slammed for reporting the
truth. Didn't the years of Nixon (for example); trying to shut Dan up remind you of today?

He doesn't deserve the crap heaped on him by alot of people. I hope Dan Rather takes down B*sh and R*ve. Sweet Justice.

5. People can say what they want
Dan Rather is possibly the last REAL news reporter there is! The man is a legend & I have more respect for him than anyone else in the news media!

6. I will miss him too - sent e-mail to CBS Evening News
I haven't watched the Evening news much lately but grew up watching Conkrite and later Dan Rather. Dan was the last to say that Kerry lost Ohio on Election night - he really made a point about not giving it to Bush too early. I appreciated that and the many other times he has shown strength and courage during interviews.

8. herding kittens!
it's like herding kittens trying to get you 'dan' admirers to see that dan rather was a player, who used his position to become vastly wealthy while maintaining the goddawful fiction that he was a real newsman, or even a real patriot....he stood by and allowed too many horrors to occur and while talking out might have gotten him killed, many many heroes did get killed and most of us don't even know their names....gary webb hasn't even been gone a month, yet...rather gets kudos!
i understand that dan rather appeared to be a 'tilter at windmills' but he was not..he was part of the media whore insiders selected for celebrity big fukking swinging dinks....and he's gonna get a secret vis with geeb (that's bush family's nikname for junior bush, a variation on john ellis bush's nik 'jeb') where they'll giggle at their stealing the candy from the big fat stupid pig baby....
i love you all enough to risk your wrather

13. Dude, I'm sorry, but bite me
I'm sad for you really.

Dan Rather was cooler than I gave him credit for, he did a lot and was a REAL journalist. Comparing him to what we have now turns him into a legend.

Why are DUers such haters?

17. Yea, what's with the assholes here?
I know they are just a fringe group that will never have any power or say but will always have a complaint or whine on hand. Dan Rather was a great reporter and we’ll be missed, yes he had his faults and admits that.

They’re just some assholes around here that think they walk on clouds above everyone else, my hope is that they limit their contact with those in the middle of the road or I fear they will drive them to the other side with their narrow mindedness.

Mar 8, 2005 — By Paul J. Gough
http://abcnews.go.com/Entertainment/wireStory?id=560323
NEW YORK (Hollywood Reporter) - Former CBS News anchor Walter Cronkite suggested Monday afternoon that Dan Rather stayed in the chair too long.

Cronkite, whom Rather replaced 24 years ago Wednesday, told CNN's "Wolf Blitzer Reports" in an interview televised Monday afternoon that Bob Schieffer, who will replace Rather on an interim basis, should have been anchor sooner. ...

snip...

"I've never understood how he stays in position so long," Trump said of Rather. "How does this guy stay in position when he always has the lowest ratings?"

10. I've always thought he was awesome.
Dan was never afraid to go after a story. To me, he is intertwined in our history, so many momentous events. I got pretty choked up too.

thankfully, he'll be going on to work for 60minutes, they will never get rid of him completetly.

Born, raised, and educated in Texas?

Texas produces wonderful DUers and some great Dems.

more visitors from Texas than Minnesota, even when adjusted for population.

Not that all liberals are vegetarians or all vegetarians are liberals, but I consider vegetarianism a progressive idea and found that interesting.

18. Damn, I missed it.
I wrote an email to Dan Rather when he was in the thick of things, saying how much I supported him.
On election night, I was tuned into Dan Rather and his quaint sayings kept me laughing. There was one like, "Elsie, don't paint the barn just yet", or something to that effect.
I just don't know who to watch now.
Loved him, will miss him. He is one of a kind.

20. Haven't watched him (or the others) for YEARS
"Newspeople" should just report the news.. When they BECOME the news, it's not a good thing..

Most "newspeople" these days have stars in their eyes, and their organizations have elevated THEM to "personality/celebrity" status, so what they report is less important than the fact that THEY are reporting it.

The whole system has cheapened the news, and turned it all into "E!"

Dan fell prey to his own press, and it bit him on the ass.. He was "safe" when there were dems in office, but he should have toned it down. Was he correct?? Probably.. BUT the way media works these days, he crafted his own demise.

He's had a "target" on his back since he challenged Poppy, and the Bush-clan is one petty vindictive bunch. There was no way they were going to let Dan exit gracefully.

The criticism from some of his colleagues, and the silence from the rest pretty much said it all.. No one dared put themselves in the line of fire for Ole Dan.. He'll just have to retire to the ranch he and his good buddy Rumsfeld own..

are trained to be just PR shrills.

The old-time digging-in-the-dirt reporters are quickly becoming a relic.
