Wounded Italian Journalist Returns Home

Giuliana Sgrena, who writes for the communist newspaper Il Manifesto, described how she was wounded and Italian intelligence officer Nicola Calipari was killed as she was celebrating her freedom on the way to the airport. The shooting Friday has fueled anti-American sentiment in a country where people are deeply opposed to U.S. policy in Iraq (news - web sites).

"I remember only fire," she said in her article. "At that point a rain of fire and bullets came at us, forever silencing the happy voices from a few minutes earlier."

Sgrena said the driver began shouting that they were Italian, then "Nicola Calipari dove on top of me to protect me and immediately, and I mean immediately, I felt his last breath as he died on me."

Suddenly, she said, she remembered her captors' warning her "to be careful because the Americans don't want you to return."

2. There is something more than meets the eye in this story, aside from the
fact that this reporter reported vehemently against the war. What is it?

4. But why would they let her go?
I'm certainly not ruling that out as a possiblity--but I think we may need to be more inclusive--Moussad?--making a little extra hostage money on the side--rogue--I don't know what to call them but I have met them overseas--rogue "paraindustrialists" the kind who feed on war. . .
I haven't found a translation of her piece yet--she will tell as much of the truth as she knows I think

7. Hmm...sounds as if the terrorists set her up to get shot
A phone call before car rolls away, making sure car takes a certain path, etc. What could make them look better after holding her hostage for so long than for the Americans to shoot and kill her? If this is not possible due to the incredible honor of the insurgents please let me know.

9. Oh my goodness
This is just insane. Thank God she's still a live though and that poor soul who saved her. At least he knows he did good. I hope she isn't blackmailed or threatned not to tell whatever it is she knows. I'm glad she was warned.
