Courage in Journalism Award
I was thinking why don't we award a Courage in Journalism Award? I've got a couple of nominees:

Gary Webb-The investigative journalist who pointed out the connection between the Contras and the influx of crack into America's ghettos.
His reporting was largely discounted but later found to be true by none other than the CIA. Ultimately forced to take his own life.

Peter Arnett-The Vietnam era reporter who had the temerity to point out that the American strategy in Iraq was a failed policy. Lost his job and is now held in semi-contempt by the corporate media

W. Leon Smith-Editor in chief of the Lone Star Iconclast. Came out against Bush in the 2004 election and has consistently pointed out the failings of the Bush administration. No small feat for a news-
paper that publishes in Crawford.

We could call it the Gary Webb Memorial Courage in Journalism Award.

What do you think?

4. You're right
Gary Webb should never be forgotten....another media person I wish to mention is Alan Berg, Denver talkradio host who was murdered by neonazis/brinks truck robbers back in 1985(?)...Alan, who dominated denver talk radio with an extrordinary liberal/left good humour spiel before Howard Stern or, lord have mercy, rush limbah-humbug (whose career took off after fairness doctrine was thrown out by reagan in 1986) might have made a difference had them ghastly pigs not listened to the best talk radio the US ever had (btw, does any Denver area DU'er remember Alan Berg's show?)
