Thousands of federal jobs may go abroad, U.S. says
By Marilyn Geewax

WASHINGTON BUREAU

Friday, September 5, 2003

WASHINGTON -- President Bush's push to outsource hundreds of thousands of federal jobs could end up shifting some high-tech employment to foreign workers, administration and industry officials said Thursday.

Although Bush has been calling for the creation of more jobs, his administration has been promoting a plan to open roughly 425,000 federal jobs to competition from private companies.

Harris Miller, president of the trade group Information Technology Association of America, nodded "yes" Thursday when asked whether that move inevitably would mean some federal jobs would go to contractors or subcontractors operating over- seas.

The use of offshore labor has become increasingly controversial as the unemployment rate has remained stubbornly high. The U.S. economy has lost 2.6 million jobs since Bush became president.

Many unemployed technology workers are blaming their job losses on employers -- including Dell Inc., Intel Corp., Motorola Inc., Computer Sciences Corp. -- who send work to low-wage countries, such as India and Ireland.

7. That's horrible
The government should be required to give contracted federal jobs to only American workers. If they are using a private company, they still can make that demand on the company. The comapny that I work for holds governement contracts so I know how demanding the government can be.

8. I agree with you.
American taxpayers should demand their tax dollars go to only American workers, American manufacturers, and America based companies.

This is getting fucking ridiculous.

9. So you think Bush will be toast over this, do you??
Did you ever think that he ALREADY IS and that's why they are just going to fuck us until we bleed for the remaining time he has left. May I caution the repuke scumbags who come along with this administration and sit in Congress: if you go along with him, you will be toast too.

11. It's called "outsourcing American democracy ."
Our government is already controlled by corporate and Israeli lobbies from within...now it will be controlled by others from outside. Way to go George. America is becoming the ultimate "leisure class" society with two sets of people...the haves an the have-nots. No one will be actually "working." You will either be one who recieves services or the one who provides service. With our Iraqi invasion and occupations sapping the lifeblood out of our economy and our war against Islamics and other Arabs sapping the lifeblood out of our souls...what will we be in the next five years? Ask the Russians who have come here in droves since their little fiasco in Afghanistan and their continuous war against their own ethnic Islamics.

Samples:

While I do support the concept of "privatization," does anyone else get the feeling that there's something really wrong when the government contracts it's jobs out to foreign workers?
-------
I wonder why this got bumped off the Breaking News.

This is news to me, and it is a huge issue.
-------

Say it ain't so, Uncle Sam! I lost my IT job because of outsourcing to India.

At the rate at which jobs are flying out of the US, pretty soon the only thing for us to do will be flipping burgers and selling insurance to each other.

So much for national security. Disgusting.

14. Screw the media. What about our own damned party?
Hell, Dean and the other candidates should be screaming about this. If they spend a week on it this policy would be reversed faster than shit. If they didn't reverse the policy, this policy alone could mean a 10% vote swing from Reps to Dems. Can you imagine the campaign ads?

16. I had a brainstorm
Does this mean I could leave Asscroft's Amerikka, say, and move to Ireland, say, and be a US citizen living abroad and working for an American company who moved its jobs there? Is that already being done?
