John Stewart busts Brian Williams -WELCOME TO THE NETWORKS, BRIAN!
Edited on Wed Mar-02-05 11:28 PM by paineinthearse
Anyone catch THE DAILY SHOW tonight?

Stewart reported that yesterday, NBC nightly news'lead story was that the LEAD judge in the Sadam Hussain trial was assassinated. NBC got the story wrong. As confirmed by NY Times, it was an ASSOCIATE judge who was killed.

OK, so NBC got a fact wrong. No big deal, right? Wrong!

In the past, when video of the lead judge was shown by the networks, to protect the judge's identity, his face would be scrambled or the angle would be from behind.

After announced the wrong judge to be dead, they showed straight video pictures of his face.

"Now anyone who watched NBC knows what the judge looks like".

OOPS!

NBC 'exclusive' on Iraqi judge assassination completely false

What do you get when you cross a factually accurate NBC News Exclusive report with a factually inaccurate NBC News Exclusive report? Nothing, Franklin, because there was no factually accurate NBC News Exclusive report to begin with. TVNewser is hot on the trail of Brian Williams & Co.'s statement at the top of last night's evening news: "There is word from Baghdad this evening -- confirmed by NBC News -- that the presiding judge in the trial of Saddam Hussein has been assassinated."

Except, well, he wasn't. The judge who was killed was one of 50 judges involved in trying former Baathists, but that wasn't made apparent until after 7pm, when Nightly News viewers likely tuned out.
The revelation of the actual victim doesn't make the loss of life any less severe - but it sure gives us actual reason to disbelieve that smug Brian Williams. All along we'd been doing it on speculation.

NBC News Reports "Presiding Judge" In Saddam Trial Has Been Assassinated, But...

NBC News appears to be stepping back from an exclusive report at the top of tonight's NBC Nightly News. "There is word from Baghdad this evening -- confirmed by NBC News -- that the presiding judge in the trial of Saddam Hussein has been assassinated," Brian Williams reported at the top of the NBC Nightly News. He called it an "NBC News Exclusive," and tossed to Jim Miklaszewski at the Pentagon. "NBC News has learned that the judge, 35 year old Raid Juhi was apparently gunned down today as he left his home in Baghdad," Mik reported. MSNBC reported the news at 7pm on Hardball.

Matt Drudge breathlessly posted the transcript, but then posted an update a few minutes later: "It's not the chief judge...its a member of the tribunal of the judges on the case." On MSNBC, Chris Matthews corrected the report, and said the presiding judge was not the one assassinated.

On FNC, Brit Hume and his panel discussed the news on Special Report around 6:45pm. Fox News sent a breaking news e-mail to its subscribers around 7:05pm. "The judge overseeing the trial of deposed Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein (search) has been assassinated, FOX News has learned," FoxNews.com said at 7:30pm, and ran it as their lead story. At the same time, CNN.com and MSNBC.com didn't have a mention of the story, and the AP hasn't moved any wire copy about it. In fact, as of 7:45pm, there hasn't been a peep from CNN...

> Update: 8:02pm: "Miklaszewski was just on Hardball backpedaling big-time about how the real victim was one of about 50 judges handling the cases of former Baathists," an e-mailer says.

> Update: 8:05pm: Fox News sent the following news alert at 6:57pm: "IRAQI JUDGE OVERSEEING SADDAM TRIAL ASSASSINATED." Who was their source?

> Update: 8:10pm: NBC News apparently corrected the error around 7:22pm. Williams tossed back to Mik for an update. I'm efforting a transcript...

I've been watching NBC Nightly News since the days of the Camel Caravan. It is so bland now, deceptively right-wing, and half infotainment. The evening news died when Dan Rather was put in a cage. I'll bet Tom Brokaw is crawling the wall!

Saddam judge killed as violence increases
While another car bomb explodes, thousands of Iraqis hold protest
By Qasim Abdul-Zahra, Associated Press

BAGHDAD, Iraq — A judge on the special tribunal that will put Saddam Hussein and members of his former regime on trial was assassinated Tuesday in the Iraqi capital, according to an Iraqi police official and a media report. Judge Barwez Mohammed Mahmoud and a relative were killed in northern Baghdad's Azamyiah district, the official told The Associated Press early today on condition of anonymity. Al-Arabiya, the Dubai-based satellite TV news network, reported that the judge and his son died in the attack. The network said the men were killed near their house in northern Baghdad. The New York Times reported that the son, Aryan Mahmoud, was a lawyer with the tribunal.

<snip>

The judges on the special tribunal have not even been identified in public because of concerns for safety, but Mahmoud was apparently the first one to die in Iraq's insurgency. Officials with the Iraqi government and the Iraqi special tribunal couldn't be reached before dawn today for comment. Mahmoud's role on the tribunal was unclear, but the law establishing it called for up to 20 investigative judges and up to 20 prosecutors. It also said the tribunal would have one or more trial chambers, each with five judges.

The killings came just one day after five former members of Saddam Hussein's regime — including one of his half brothers — were referred to trial for crimes against humanity. The announcement Monday by the tribunal marked the first time that the special court issued referrals, similar to indictments, which are the final step before trials can start. Saddam was captured in December 2003, and others have been in custody for nearly two years.

U.S. military officials transferred 12 of the top defendants to Iraqi custody in June with the handover of sovereignty. They're being held at an undisclosed location near Baghdad International Airport, west of the capital. Abu Musab al-Zarqawi's terror group, which has repeatedly seized foreigners and attacked Americans, purportedly claimed responsibility for the suicide bombing in Hillah. It was not possible to independently verify the claim, which was posted on the Internet.

No he won't, sadly.

A year from now if you bring this up, no one will know what you're talking about.

Twenty years from now, though, if you talk about Dan Rather, everyone will nod and think about the "forged" documents about Bush's National Guard shit.

How many journalists (and I use the term loosely) get people killed (well, besides Judith Miller, Robert Novak, Dana whatshername of the PentaPost, the editors of the WaPost and NYT, all the editors of all the papers that beat the drums for the Iraq war, the Faux people).

I mean, really, getting someone killed is bad journalism; unless, of course, you're one of the above named scoundrels.

25. Reminds me of the time when Mike Wallace got Sadat killed.
Wallace interviewed the Ayatollah and told him what Egyptian president Anwar Sadat had said about him. "Forgive me, his words not mine..."

Apparantly Homeini hadn't heard about it and issued a fatwa on the spot.

Within weeks, Sadat had been assasinated.

Thanks, Mike Wallace. Why don't you go on WFW and tell Stone Cold Steve Austin that The Rock stole his girlfriend.

NBC NEWS EXCLUSIVE: NBC'S JIM MIKLASZEWSKI REPORTS TONIGHT THAT THE JUDGE IN THE SADDAM HUSSEIN TRIAL HAS BEEN ASSASSINATED.

Tue Mar 01 2005 19:09:22 ET

BRIAN WILLIAMS INTRO:

Good evening. We're going to begin here with an NBC News

We've learned tonight the violence in Iraq has claimed another victim, and this time, it is a high-profile target: a man who knew he had a dangerous job. There is word from Baghdad this evening -- confirmed by NBC News -- that the presiding judge in the trial of Saddam Hussein has been assassinated. American television viewers at the time remember him as the brave man on the bench but at the time only the back of his head was visible on television because the risk to his life was that obvious. He lived amid heavy security. Tonight his death is a graphic reminder of the everyday danger still in Iraq. NBC's Jim Miklaszewski is with us from the Pentagon tonight. Jim good evening.

JIM MIKLASZEWSKI REPORTING:

Good evening Brian. NBC News has learned that the judge, 35 year old Raid Juhi was apparently gunned down today as he left his home in Baghdad. Now Juhi was seen on video but just barely last July during the initial court appearances of Saddam Hussein.

The young judge at the time gained widespread respect and admiration when he stood his ground against the belligerent former dictator who launched into a lecture during the proceedings.

Juhi had already been the target of several assassination attempts, and was forced to move into a walled compound with his wife and three small boys behind concrete walls that could withstand bombs.

He normally traveled with armed escorts, but the details around his assassination today remain unclear.

He was a former prosecutor under the former Saddam Hussein regime -- and as an investigative judge was handling 12 high profile cases, including Saddam Hussein and the infamous Chemical Ali.

U.S. officials see the assassination today as an attack not only on the judge, but the entire Iraqi judicial system. Nevertheless, they predict despite today's assassination, the legal proceedings against Saddam Hussein will remain on course. A date for Saddam's next court appearance has yet to be scheduled.

Developing...

Iraqi Judge in Saddam Tribunal Shot Dead
By REUTERS

Filed at 11:29 p.m. ET

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Gunmen in Baghdad killed a judge working for the Iraqi special tribunal set up to try Saddam Hussein and his top lieutenants, a setback in efforts to close the chapter on decades of oppression.

<snip>

Judge Barawiz Mahmoud and his son, who worked as a lawyer, were killed as they left their home in north Baghdad Tuesday. His death was the first assassination of a member of the special tribunal, which includes around 50 trial judges, investigating magistrates, prosecutors and appeals court judges.

Mahmoud's other son Maryon said the attack was politically motivated because his father was seeking to bring Saddam and former members of his Baath party to justice. ``I was sleeping and I heard shooting. I came out and saw blood running from my father's neck. My father was shot twice and my brother 11 times,'' he said near the scene of the shootings. A female relative wailed inside the home. ``We knew this was coming because of my father's work. He and my brother died holding their heads up high. This gives me comfort.''

<snip>

The judge's killing came a day after the tribunal referred its first charges against defendants, saying it had enough evidence to put five former Baath party officials on trial, including Saddam's half brother Barzan Ibrahim al-Hassan al-Tikriti and former Deputy Prime Minister Taha Yasin Ramadan. The trial is not expected to begin for at least another seven weeks. Saddam, who briefly appeared before a judge last July, is expected to be tried next year on war crimes charges. Iraqi officials involved with the special tribunal say they hope the trials of Saddam's top deputies will help build a case against the former dictator, captured in December 2003.
