Today's anti-climactic MSNBC headline: "Americans unhappier at work"
U.S. employees more dissatisfied with jobs
Productivity push, new technology seen weighing on workers

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/7045772/

NEW YORK - U.S. workers, pushed to produce more and uneasy about new technology and other changes, are markedly less satisfied with their jobs than a decade ago, a new survey says.

But the decline in on-the-job happiness, which continued through economic cycles in recent years, has at least temporarily leveled off, according to the survey released Monday by The Conference Board, a New York-based business research group.

Half of U.S. workers are happy with their jobs, down from nearly 59 percent in 1995, according to the survey. Of those, just 14 percent say they are very satisfied. The number of those satisfied is slightly higher than in a similar survey done in 2003, when just below 50 percent of workers indicated they were content with their jobs.

Compared to a decade ago, job satisfaction has declined among all types of workers, but the drop varies by age and income. The biggest decline in on-the-job happiness was among workers earning $25,000 to $35,000 and among workers between the ages of 35 to 44. The workers most satisfied with their jobs are those at least 65 years old, the survey found.

1. I can't imagine why - I LOVE having an axe over my head!
Latest timeline for my dept's outsourcing is late April/early May - we've known for almost a year that the day will come...
Oh well, at least it's "onshoring" which means I can apply to a new company to do my same job at a substantially lower salary!!!

Just a barrel of laughs --

2. Gee, treat people like replaceable cogs in a machine,
make fewer of them do more work over longer hours, threaten them with the permanent loss of their jobs overseas if they don't shut up and take it, plus invade their time off with drug testing to make sure they're not doing anything you don't like off the job and you think they're gonna be HAPPY?????

I'm surprised more people aren't going postal in this shit economy.

3. Who'd a thunk it?

Most people between 35 and 44 are supporting families. 25,000 - 35,000 is not a living wage if you are trying to support a family. I'm single, and barely making it on 25,000. At the other end, the happiest ones are those closest to retirement! Duh!

4. Consider yourself lucky that you're not in California...

...$25,000 wouldn't get you a studio apartment here.

You'd have a dozen roommates or you'd be living in your car...if you could afford the gas.

The median home price here...with EVERYTHING that's gone down the tubes...is STILL a cool half million.

We have nice weather. We're obscenely overcrowded. Bush's "base" is making a killing over small, dirty, overpriced apartments / condos / townhomes / etc.

As a matter of fact, a lot of apartments just started CALLING themselves "condos" so they could double the rent.

ON EDIT: Just want to be clear here...some of these "half million dollar" homes resemble Port-O-Potties and are in BAD neighborhoods. You want a "decent" home, and the asking price starts at a million.
