Surprising, I like to listen to Dr. Laura
I know she is a right winger type, but I find I enjoy listening to her show. She does have some good advice I think at times.

6. Charles Manson also had good advice, " at times".
Actually, I used to listen to her also... no Air America in those days and she was preferable to the political RW morons on the other stations.

Now you can't hear her at all in NYC, due to gay led boycott.

Politically, she's a fool and an idiot. However, she has a facility with the language that is a pleasure to listen to. Too bad it masks judgmentalism, arrogance and unresolved rage ( if I may indulge a little p-babble of my own.)

52. Actually, Laura is a "Doctor" only in the PhD sense....
and , interestingly, her degree is in physiology, not psychology.

To be fair, I believe she does have a degree in Family Counseling, or something close. But the "Doctor" part is all packaging.

But I believe her license has expired, if that's possible. The "Dr." thing is ALL marketing.

54. I think it was the physiology thing that sank her in NYC...
evidently she was speaking as a sort of authority in that area and said something to the effect that homosexuality was a " biological error".

However, she's an interesting case. I remember her defending gays against fundamentalist callers. Then, around 10 yrs. ago, probably around the time she completed her metamorphosis from no religion to ultra-orthodox Judaism ( H is punishable by death) she seemed to make a conscious choice to change her position on H; only she didn't represent it in religious terms ( which probably had something to do with it) or in political terms ( it was the only part of the RW agenda that she did NOT subscribe to and annoyed her natural constituency) she attributed it to " biological error"... i.e. an issue of physiological issue.

She is, one might say , a piece of work. Possibly a work in progress, but I'm not real optimistic about that.

66. goodgoda'mighty!!! You are right!
Fascinating stuff. The phrase 'self-created drama' keeps coming to mind when I think of Laura. She's sort of the gift that will not stop giving... whether you want it to or NOT.

I'll catch up later with her continuing saga.Lot's to read. Did she become even more RW-er post Judaism? What does she say about religion now? Did the very strange murder of her mother, which, far as I know, went unsolved, have anything to do with it?

One can't hear her in NYC, (not that I really want to; I favored the boycott) so I'm not really up on my Dr. Laura trivia. Ya gotta admit: "Laura" is more interesting than most TV soaps.

Her 18-yr old son recently enlisted in the military!
I thought that was quite interesting.

Dr. Laura is totally pro-Iraq war. I've heard her tell a woman that she was "evil"--because she was upset about her husband being called up to serve in a war with which she didn't agree.

Last week, a woman called up crying. She could barely speak. Her son served one tour in Iraq and was getting ready to leave for this second tour. The woman was so distraught and she said she didn't know if she could take this. Dr Laura totally snapped at her, discounted all of her feelings and told her she needed to buck up and take up a hobby to take her mind off things while he was away. You could tell the woman just needed some validation and wanted to hear that two tours was unfair and tough on families. Dr. Laura was having none of that.

It will be interesting to see if Dr. Laura's son goes to Iraq. She touts the cause as if she's on the White House payroll. Now, her son has signed on. It will be interesting to see how this all unfolds.

30. I was a caller on her show once...
Edited on Mon Feb-28-05 05:53 PM by TwoSparkles
...and it didn't go too well.

My husband dared me to call her, so I did. It was totally on a lark.
My husband's biggest issue with me is that I never take time for myself, so we decided to ask her what she thought of me never taking time off--if that was a good thing. We thought she would simply agree that all moms need a break--sometimes.

Here's the conversation as I remember it:

ME:"I'm a stay-at-home mom to two preschool aged girls, and I was wondering if I'm being selfish if I take a three-hour block of time--once a week, for just myself."

DRLAURA: "Well, that depends. What are you wanting to do with this three-hour block of time?"

ME: "It would be 'me' time...whatever I wanted to do...like hang out at a bookstore, take a yoga class or jog."

DRLAURA: "Well, can't you get one of those baby joggers? I see women outside all of the time, running while their babies ride in one of those joggers that you push."

ME: "Well...I...uhhhh...

DR LAURA: "Listen, we'd all love time off. How many half-finished craft projects did I have in the garage? Being a mother is hard work. I remember and I feel for you. But those kids need you. By the way, what does your husband think of you taking off?"

ME: "He's very supportive. He thinks I need to take time off."

DRLAURA: "He sounds like a nice guy. However, I doubt that he really wants to come home from work and then have you leave him all by himself. He wants to be with you. Don't you think? You don't want such a nice guy coming home from work and then being without you, do you?"

ME: "Well....I....uhhhh....

DRLAURA: "Do you think you and your husband can find one of those baby joggers."

ME: I'm sure we can probably find one, but...

DRLAURA: ...and I thank you for your call.

42. LOL! So true!
I was like...HELLO! You want me to put two toddlers in a baby jogger--and then call that quality 'me time'?

My kids would be hurling out toys from the inside of that thing, fighting with each other, bouncing all over the place and screaming out of the mesh sides, "Mommy! MOMMY!! Where are you? We can't see you!!"

Yeahhhh. Big, relaxing fun. Cracks me up. :)

Isn't it interesting that Dr. Laura lambastes women who don't stay at home--but she has always been a working mom? She claims that her radio schedule never got in the way of mothering--because she could do her program while her child was in school.

Well, that's all nice for her! But how many women have their own radio programs? What about the rest of the women, who live in the real world and don't have the job-flexibility of a millionaire-celebrity-radio-personality?

As a stay-at-home mom--I think she gives stay-at-home moms a bad name! She's got this us v them thing going on....and it's not helpful.

46. Maybe you should get a baby jogger, then cover your face
with a veil, and wrap your whole body in a shroud. After all whats right in Dr Laura's world is that all parents are defined by their children. I am my kids dad, I have no identity, no independant thoughts, no life, no joy and no pleasure, unless it directly involves raising my children. How quaint....

49. Yes, the "I am my kids' mom" thing is really outrageous...
Some callers will immediately identify themselves as Dr. Laura-friendly by saying, "Hi Dr. Laura...I am 'my kids' mom'"...

Dr. Laura has explained that to say "I am my kids mom" means that you are home raising your children. Because, if you work and others are looking after them, then you are not raising your own children; therefore you are not really your "kids' mom" or your "kids' dad". Someone else is.

How hateful and offensive does she have to be?

Edited on Mon Feb-28-05 06:00 PM by grumpy old fart
was from a single woman in her late 30's who found out she was pregnant by a one night stand. She wanted to keep the baby, as she was getting up in years, had not met a man she wanted to marry, desperately wanted a child and was a well off professional. Dr. Laura's "advice" was that the woman was a worthless, sleazy slut, that she had no business raising a child, and that the child had to be given up for adoption. She left this woman, who the good doctor didn't know from squat, in tears. Yep, that's Dr. Laura. Just pure evil, IMHO.

69. If you have never been a single parent
trust me on this one. TWO people make so much of a difference in a child's life. One person cannot do the job of two people in a good solid relationship. I don't agree with the "slut" thing, That is stupid. Who expects an almost 40 year old person to remain celebate is stupid.

Still, Dr. Laura is always on the side of the children, and while I HATE her politics, I do like that she makes people accountable for their kids.

81. So a loving, intelligent, financially secure mother should abandon.....
her child? Man, that's just stone evil and wrong.

looking for a good beating. And she's oh-so-happy to oblige.

44. she is a one-strike authority
One strike, and she assumes you are trash. In almost every call she takes, you screwed up, you are not to be trusted ever again and have no chance for improvement or redemption. Guess that counts her out after the nude photos.

45. She used to be on
every evening on the radio station I like to listen to. I usually have it on in my bedroom. HOWEVER, she's been cut back to about 2 hours on Sunday afternoons. But, there's many a time, as I'm in the living room, I have heard that stupid intro music and LITERALLY flung myself over the top of my couch to turn my radio off. hee. Even being in the next room knowing that shrill harpy is spouting off in my bedroom freaks me out.

And her religious pretensions are as phony as Bush's.

50. I once heard her tell
a young man with a terminal illness that he had no right to involve himself in a relationship and get married to the girl he loved, because he had no right to risk having a child that would lose its father. Yep! If you're gonna die young, you have to be lonely for the rest of your short life, according to "Dr" Laura. I about drove off the road. The kind of mental reasoning that goes into formulating such a response to a caller is truly frightening.

56. Try Dr. Joy Browne, if you like that kind of thing.
She is awesome. I don't agree with everything she says, but she's really the anti-Laura.

58. I used to listen to her until the station
stopped carrying her show. I used to enjoy listening while I was making dinner. I thought her advice was pretty good. She was very nice to children when they would call for advice.

She did tend to get harsh and more right-wingy the longer she was on the air. I agreed with her about shacking up not being a good idea for women. And it certainly isn't the best situation for children, either.

All in all, I thought her advice was good, common sense advice and she didn't go along with all the pc stuff around today. :eyes:

61. I like her too
roasting on a spit.

Seriously, how can you tolerate that pig? She hates gays, she's pro-criminalization, she wants to shove men and women into their pre-WWII cubbyholes, she hates non-fundie churchs.

Her "good advice" is grounded in a pitifully RW worldview, and I don't think it's worth a goddamned thing.

And besides, she's a phony; she doesn't have a doctorate in psychology.

Dr. Laura's Mother Found Murdered

LOS ANGELES, Dec. 21, 2002

(AP) Telling her audience, "I have to talk to you listeners about something," radio host Dr. Laura then dropped a bombshell: "You may have already heard that my mother was found murdered."

snip

The body was discovered when officers made a check at a North Palm Drive residence after a neighbor became concerned about not seeing the woman for several weeks.

The investigation has yet to narrow down the date of death.

Laura Schlessinger said her mother had shut the family out of her life for years.

77. She throws the word "slut" around pretty loosely
and encourages parents to disown adult children for living their own lives. I think she's anti-family really.
