That is not elective.

Hope the Pope has his healthcare explained better to him than the media explains.

4. It was 'elective' in the sense that it was not an emergency.
It was, literally, elective.

5. ummm sorry
I have never heard of an "elective" tracheotomy. Ever. Trachs aren't like nosejobs.

He was taken in on the ambulance...he is on a respirator.

That's an emergency, I don't give a damn what the Vatican wants to call this.

6. Well, his doctors disagree.
I'm sure they'll defer to your obviously superior knowledge of the subject, however.

7. Beg your pardon. I didn't realize you were in contact with his Drs
I assumed that people were reading the same bullshit press reports I was.

Can you tell them to give the Pope a message for me? I know he can't answer, but I want him to know how disappointed I am in him for his stance on Gays in the church.

Thank you so much.

Stephanie

8. Actually, ABC Radio News reported that that's what his doctor said.
Do you know differently?

9. Pope Has Tracheotomy, Now on Respirator
http://story.news.yahoo.com/fc?cid=34&tmpl=fc&in=World&cat=Pope_John_Paul_II

Pope John Paul II underwent a successful operation to insert a tube in his throat to relieve his breathing problems, hours after he was rushed back to the hospital Thursday for the second time in a month with flu-like symptoms of fever and congestion, the Vatican said. The pontiff was conscious in his hospital room after the tracheotomy, breathing with the help of a respirator, the Italian news agency

12. I mean no disrespect to the Pope, but...
I have to admit that this whole thing reminds me of that old joke about Frank who called home from his vacation and asked how his dog was doing. His brother said "The dog died."

Frank says, "Jeesh, man, you don't just come right out and say it that way--you gotta let me down gently. You should have said the dog ran off and you are looking for him to come home soon. Now, how's all the family doing?"

The brother sat for a second and then says:

"Grandma ran off and we are looking for her to come home soon."

___

Again, I mean no disrespect--because I know a lot of people really do care a great deal for the Pope. It seems to me like maybe they are leading up to telling everyone just how bad the news really is.

I don't think I have ever heard of an "elective" trach--but I am not a Doc, and maybe it really WAS an optional thing. It could be that his breathing was SO obstructed that they feared brain damage and felt they HAD to do such a damaging procedure--none of us will probably ever know for sure.

I do hope he's not in pain, and that those who love him can find some comfort soon.
