Walter Cronkite on Larry King NOW lambasting the Patriot Act./EVERYTHING.
Edited on Wed Sep-10-03 08:48 PM by Gloria
"freedom to think," "freedom to research" ....Act is opposite our right to free speech...
King wheedling about " peril" Cronkite saying sure, but....have to have good reason, have to have a suspect....Courts closed to proceedings of these trials..

Patriotic--have to really define it.....doesn't have to do with invading other countries...has to do with what's within the country...(founding fathers)...King mentioning how McGovern was brave, was shot down as being "unpatriotic"

Sinking feeling....HERE WE GO AGAIN...4 years of WWII, 5 years in Viet Nam...of all the years we're facing in this conflict....

UN...lambasts the speech Bush made...."we're going in anyway" at end of speech laying out "the case"

We're inspiring (hatred?) greated than it existed before among the Arab states....

What's the end game, asks Larry?

We're going to have to go with the UN, we're having to eat crow, now that we're in the hole, it's going to cost more, more people.

King--Misled??

Cronkite--yes, we were misled...whether it was deliberate or their vocabulary got ahead of their thinking

King-wanted to go to war?? Oh, yes definitely....

King-why would they want to go to war? President was convinced Hussein was a "living danger" and had to be eliminated...How....plannng was inadequate...(my note--let Bush off easy on this one).

8. Media study.....CBS most positive for war, ABC least....
CBS in the 70% range, FAUX, 60% range, then NBC, then ABC...

Doesn't know, doesn't watch them all. Doesn't watch the "opposition" .
Still loyal to CBS....may be true....

11. Thinks Dean is doing "quite well" --
King --surprised?

Somewhat....came up from out of nowhere, with no record on the national scene....but I think he did quite well. I think all of them did well last night...the field...better than some thought it might be...

...I have a feeling Gen. Clark is going to come in...and I think he make a quite powerful candidate...strong opinions about the war and what we've been doing wrong. Coming from a general that will have a stronger impact than from a civilian.

Bush beatable? I believe now, he is....The war, Dems will be stuck with it, that's why Clark....(unintelligible) also the economy.. trickle down, tax cuts, even if that did show an effect, won't be enough to wipe out the memory of strong unemploymemt...not just the unemployment, the depression.

Gonna be a long campaign, a DIRTY CAMPAIGN. whoever survives the primary season, going to take on the administration in every aspect.

California? "ridiculous mess"--MISUSE OF DEMOCRACY, the recall... is DANGEROUS, it's a dangerous move...if other states adopt it, ELECTIONS MEAN NOTHING.
