Art Linkletter?????
Seriously -- Art Linkletter?

A) How is he still alive?

B) Who gives a damn what Art Linkletter thinks?

C) Is that the best Karl Rove and the right-wing smear machine can come up with????

2. I wondered about that too...
Although I did enjoy his interviews with kids on his "House Party" and other shows in the 60s. He must have crossed over to the Dark Side at some point.

7. He lost it
back when his daughter died. She jumped out of a window after she took some LSD back in the late 60s. He hasn't been the same since.

15. Wow I had no idea
When I went away to college in the early 70s, my dad was so worried that I would take drugs and jump out of a window. Cause you know if Art Linkletter's daughter did it, then it could happen to anyone.

13. Plenty of hearsay evidence he was a jerk before then:
My understanding is that there is still question whether LSD had anything to do with the death.

4. I also thought he was dead. Maybe they are pulling a Robert Heinlein
with him. (He's really dead, but they are not telling anyone)
Isn't it interesting that they are using him to campaign against AARP? Didn't he once advertize for them?
Parallel reality... Soylent Green.... 1984... What the hell is going on?

11. I'm astonished that he's still alive but....
he was associated with the GOP way back in the Nixon era and before.

If memory serves, he had a daughter who committed suicide, allegedly under the influence of LSD, and he then launched on an anti-drug, anti-counterculture, anti-left kick... probably as a reaction to that event.

16. 93 years old say the darndest things
There are a couple of things I absolutely detest:

1. Multimillionaire lobbyist testifying to congress about how the minimum wage shouldn't be raised.

2. Multimillionaire elderly people be used to destroy Social Security when they don't need it one bit.

17. He is the archetype of the worst of "the greatest generation."
What a vile bastard he is. Back in the day (the 60's), his daughter committed suicide. He capitalized on it (ala Carol Burnett and her druggie daughter) by starting a crusade against LSD, which he said was the cause. Had to maintain the family franchise at all costs.

I don't think seniors will be too swayed by him. My parents were of his generation and they thought he was an asshole.

18. Why Art Linkletter?
Edited on Mon Feb-21-05 11:28 PM by drm604
I think Josh Marshall at Talking Points Memo got it right when he said "presumably because Lawrence Welk, being dead, wasn't available."
Linkletter is someone a lot of older people feel affection and trust towards (less so than Welk but Welk is dead). My grandmother, although she was an intelligent and thoughtful woman, might very well have fallen for it - it's Art Linkletter after all. My mother, however, will not fall for it and, judging from what she tells me about the conversations at her recent SAAC meeting, neither will a lot of other people. Still, Linkletter could have a powerful influence amongst the oldest of the current retirees and, in my mind, using him is a scummy trick. But then scummy tricks are pretty much what we've come to expect aren't they. As far as Linkletter's motivations, my personal guess (and it's nothing more than that) is that either he's being taken in by the arguments that there is a so-called crisis, or he needs (or wants) the money so badly that he doesn't care.

On edit: others here have spoken about his motivations and are probably closer to the mark then I am. I had no idea that he was so strongly connected with the right.

Edited on Tue Feb-22-05 12:28 AM by Zinfandel
and their image, to push the Bush agenda & their corporate lies.

Many senior's grew up with the Linkletter bullshit, and lots trust the fucker.

This is Rove's usual tactic's...They then finance the right-wing groups television, radio and print ads... The corporate media's talking heads sell it...

While Bush does his bullshit "press conferences", and the republicans go on every possible television & radio show, ALL repeating the same mantra, (the White House daily memos and talking points) ponnding it over and over again until the people believe the lies as fact.

This is a job for MoveOn.org to counteract the bullshit!

Maybe a zillion letters from people who used to watch his show saying how could you betray us this way would give him second thoughts.

28. That rat bastard
He was one of those "land developers" that rolled into our little town in the '60's along with Lawrence Welk and proceded to tear up the land and build piece of shit track homes all over the place.
Those cocksuckers better find a good place to hide in the afterlife because I will be gunnin' for 'em!
