Goetterdammerung, or how will it all end?
In the last chapter of “The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich” William Shirer chronicles the last days of Hitler’s Nazi regime as the allies close in on Germany from all sides. He titles it Goetterdammerung for Wagner’s opera “The Twilight of the Gods”, the last of his ring trilogy.

Hitler is down in his Berlin bunker with his close associates and friends barking orders for a scorched earth policy for the Germans. If he had to go, the German people would go with him. By this time so many German soldiers had died in his wars of invasion that the German army now consisted mostly of old men and teenaged boys.

He ordered all supplies of food and other goods needed for survival be destroyed and all crops burned and livestock destroyed. Fortunately, for once, the Nazis didn’t obey orders. I’m sure if there had been nukes, Hitler would have used them, which brings me to my concerns with the Bush Administration.

It’s apparent that they are starting to lose power. The revelations that are now coming out about their crooked dealings and lies aren’t going to go away as easily as before. When they are finally brought down and cornered, what will they do? Will they use nukes on us in a final desperate attempt to bring about a Rapture or Twilight of the Gods scenario before they go down in flames?

Does anyone believe, they will go this far? Will our complacent leadership finally wake up and not follow orders? I really wonder. I’m sorry to be so glum in my thinking but weeks of rain makes me depressed, and it doesn’t hurt to think about the most extreme possibilities just in case.

1. Cleita, it does hurt to think about the most extreme possibilities

because it's bound to either freak the hell out of you or else plunge you into a deep depression.

Depression suppresses your immune system and that can mean serious illness or, at its worst, death.

I know-- I've been terribly depressed since the "election" and finally realized it was doing me serious damage so I had to step back until I could be more on an even keel.

I don't know if anyone knows what's going to happen down the line-- much depends on us, I believe. We can only take it a day at a time and pray that those higher-ups representing us have enough sense and/or knowledge to know what they're doing.

And of course, we have to keep on doing what we're doing.

7. You know what, dying right now doesn't seem like such
a bad option. I think I would rather do it now than later when all my Social Security and Medicare has been rendered worthless by this administration.

8. I hear you, Cleita, but don't let the bastards get you down
If you do, they win. We have to keep on fighting but enjoy life at the same time. (not so easy, I know!!)

2. If you're crazy, I'm crazy
The concept of advise and consent is gone, there are no safeguards on this so-called presidency, and the people in charge are dumber than a bag of hammers. Megalomania prevails.

More to the point, and because it's so brilliant, watch Kubrick's "Dr. Stangelove, Or How I Learned To Stop Worrying And Love The Bomb."

That movie's - what? - 40 years old? Peter George saw it all coming.

If you're crazy, I'm crazy, but, yeah, I can see it coming, too.

Cheer up, though - I'm old enough to know that the good guys win, and I still believe that the good guys will do something heroic in time.

3. I've seen it several times, but I never imagined
when it first came out during the height of the cold war and nuke scare that it could be so prophetic. Then I just thought it was really impossible for anyone to be so dumb to start a nuclear war.

4. I find it interesting that now that the MSM has done its part to help
get B*sh another term, it is now free to start snacking on the Bushies. No better sign of a lame-duck than the knowledge that the people who got you where you are can now turn on you for ratings, circulation, and PR.

5. If the media can pull it off they'll spin it 'till the next election cycle
and create another "dramatic ratings event" in the form of an election.

10. Your fears are well founded-These are pathological maniacs at the helm
Dr. Strangefeld, Alfred E. Wolfowitz, Abrams, Bolton and of course the man with his hair trigger finger on the button, Dick "Bunker" Cheney, Are looney tunes. I do not mean this flippantly. Too much attention is focused on Bush's stupidity and not enough on just how viciously homicidal these characters are. Here are a few excerpts from a recent article found on www.antiwar.com:
Bush's supporters of wider war are longing for a violent event that they can translate into a Pearl Harbor magnitude "attack on America," however it is provoked, whatever its true ingredients. As Solzhenitsyn observed, lies always bring violence in their wake – and the neocons want ever more violence. And they have proved it by lying to us incessantly.
<snip>
Someday soon, expect to hear that America has been attacked – in the Middle East, in some other faraway land, or perhaps on our own soil. At that point, George Bush will gravely stride to the podium and announce that, while "9/11 changed everything," everything has changed yet again. America must adopt a "new realism," he will announce, and adopt a "true war footing" to address the world war we are in. Taxes will skyrocket, government powers will mushroom, and the draft will be brought back with a vengeance. And, like my father and his companions in America First before World War Two, opponents of this war will be expected to retire to the bleachers and cheer, wondering all the while how their drafted sons and daughters are faring out there in some distant desert far from home.
Plato said that a tyrant is one who acts out his nightmares when he is awake. The neocons want you wake up one morning to their nightmare. If you rub your eyes and see violence on all sides, and your family starts getting draft notices in the mail, you might wonder how it all happened.

Well, here's the answer:

Remember Pearl Harbor.

11. They really are crazy because they operate like a cult.
That's what makes them so scary and I really wish other nations would step in and demand oversight on our WMD's so they can't use them with impunity.

12. Armegeddon is what they call it,
although I prefer the German version. In which, incidently, the gods also die along with everybody else. No rapture, no wings, no cookies, no cake. Return to Go, do not collect $200. Reboot.

Yes, they are totally mad. And they will probably use nukes if they get a chance. God is on their side. Bleeech!

15. A Canadian commentator by the name of Cunningham
(can't remember his first name, but it could be Brian) said that they are just repackaging the same old meme at the end of the day. Ha, ha. I wish our punditry were so blunt.
