"When did you first write an article for GOPusa?"

"I don't know the answer to that."

My ass.

The first article I wrote for truthout was February 2002.

Andersen just stomped the balls off this guy. Nicely done.

*That* was an interview. I hope Wolf was taking notes.

93. What one is -
as long as one isn't a hypocite and a liar - is irrevelant. Anderson Cooper - who could sit on his ass and eat bon-bons - is out among 'em, earning a living and proving to be a pretty decent guy.

And, if Anderson Cooper is gay - d'ya think it just might be more painful for him to try to get this story to the public?

I'm not dissing you - I mostly enjoy your posts. Asking you to maybe think better of people...

And didn't he have an issue with Falwell over it? He sparred with him regarding gay marriage and said "we pay taxes", but I think it was edited out by a homophobic CNN.

Here:

Interview with Jerry Falwell, 29 November 2004:

COOPER: But there are a lot of gay families out there, Reverend Falwell, there are a lot of gay families out there. I think there are like a million kids being raised by gay parents who say that if you want to protect families, you know, civil unions will give inheritance rights, will give Social Security, survivor benefits rights to...

FALWELL: Anderson, that's all a red herring. If you want to leave something to your cat, you can do that in your will...

COOPER: It's not a red herring. That's simply not true. It's not true. You know we pay taxes.

86. interesting point
I had to hang around the tube for a half hour to catch it, but it was worth it -- just posted what Pitt did on another chat room -- that's what stuck out to me, also -- you were writing for GOPUSA (admitting that Talon wasn't in operation in February) -- when? This is the second interview I've seen with Jimmy/Jeff -- the first being Leslie's -- and the guy is as nervous as a cat on a hot tin roof -- thought he told E&P he wasn't going to do anymore talking to the media? I have no idea Anderson's orientation, nor do I care, but I wonder if Guckert thought he would be friendly -- why in the heck is he giving ANY interviews? Good bag for Anderson, however.

56. Yes, but Cooper failed to point out that it wasn't his personal life...
...and it wasn't in the irrelevant past. Gay prostitution was GanGuck's business, and his Internet ads were still up and running well after he started getting daily access to the White House.

Cooper did a great job. "That's not reporting--that's faxing" was perfect! I just wish that the media would stop accepting the meme that this has been an invasion of Ganguck's privacy. Nothing could be further from the truth.

Well my latest approach to everyone _not_ DU is to treat them like children ... and not with the *-brand "stern father", but rather the "supporting nuturer".

Essentially if someone says they think * is "good", I treat them like a child I love but who absolutely believes in invisible tea parties. I say that's all fine and dandy then, and if they're "old enough" I drop a few hints that "they probably know _big_ boys and girls don't do that" ... on the other hand, if they're a little rabid, I try to treat them like a little child who can't quite get it through their head that smearing 'poo-poo' on the walls is NOT a good idea. Those ones of course need special attention, but I've been very impressed in how well its been working.

So as "the adult" I "suspend my disbelief" in the fantasy world enough to help them see that there is a "nice way to play" and that they are always growing up more...

Frankly, NOTHING else has worked; without the compassion of my view I'd be hard pressed not to consider every one of them I've talked with as THE WORST MORANS EVER! (whew, I do have to 'outgas' occasionally from the pent-up frustrations!)

53. I just got this from Cooper..
"Thanks for your email. Here's our problem. We want you to know that we really do read every single email you viewers send us. No, honestly. But reading your email is one thing, and composing individual answers to each one is another. That would be a full-time enterprise. In which case, there'd be no AC 360. In which case, there'd be no emails. You see where we're headed.

Anyway, the best we can do is to acknowledge that we have indeed received and will read your message, and this little note is to let you know that. It's automatic, yes; fails to take into account whether you've patted us on the back or slapped us across the face; does not differentiate between praise, correction, fury, proposals of marriage, or invitations to get lost. But rest assured we'll know that part when we read it!"

So..evidently the e-mails are read..they just can't answer them all.

125. If someone needs to, they can take a website down in minutes...
It's no big deal. He still has the email address of the person who built them and put them up. One email asking they be taken down by such and such a time & they would be gone. The fact that they are still there says to me that he must still be in the business. Granted, he may have gotten very excited about all of the inside information that he became privy to but how could someone actually forget their business sites? And he forgot about them for more than 2 years? Please. Besides, most people don't pay their hosting 2 or more years at a time.

I'm not buying it.

Oh and the pseudonym? Real journalists don't use them, even in small market media. Once upon a time, I went to work for a very small market radio station. I planned to use an air name because I was originally hired as on air talent. The next thing I knew, I was asst. news director. The air name went out the window, too many people knew my real name in that town, I couldn't have gotten away with it. No one would have talked to me.

As an opportunity to be a direct mouthpiece getting the right talking points out, having him "remote interviewed" might be too much to pass on for El Novo Rovo...

44. I also thought he MIGHT have a 'wire' in his ear. On several questions...
particularly early on, his eyes moved completely side to side, then a pause as if he were listening to cues from a 'wire.' And the interview WAS done 1-1/2 hours earlier. Usually Cooper interviews people live. This time he kept stressing it was taped earlier.

54. I was just thinking the same watching the video again and
not once do you see a typical wire. Could the "visual value" of guckert looking being "unprompted and honest" be so high they'd make sure he's got a really invisible one?

He could be well versed in his talking points, but I hate to say it but if someone has better communication skills they probably don't end up being a gay male prostitute...!!! lol

There's also edits in the interview. I wonder what got cut (other than Gayckert's 8+!)

115. I thought the same thing about a wire- I also found he "blinked" rapidly
everytime there was a tough question and where he hesitated because he had to quickly "think up" (or listen) to an answer....

When it was a basic, easy going question, he tended to blink less and look more confident...

Anderson Cooper was brilliant...it was like watching a skilled Prosecutor ask purposeful questions and go back and forth between easy ones that made the person comfortable to the tough ones that clearly made him uncomfortable...

I'm not a big Anderson Cooper fan and don't watch him regularly but I'll admit if he does more often what he did today with the interview w/ Gannon, I'll be a more regular viewer.

An excerpt:

Jeff Gannon (James Guckert) to CNN in Friday Night Interview: "I've Made Mistakes in My Past...of a Very Personal and Private Nature"

By ADVOCATE STAFF

In a Friday night interview with CNN's Anderson Cooper (host of the general news show "Anderson Cooper 360"), White House "journalist" Jeff Gannon (a.k.a. James Guckert) told the cable host that, indeed, many of his White House "reports" were simply copies of White House statements, which Guckert described as his attempt to bring people "the unvarnished, unfiltered version of what they believe."

Gannon/Guckert also tried to defend his use in the White House of the name "Jeff Gannon" instead of the name printed on his driver's license, James Guckert.

Guckert said that it is "not uncommon" for journalists, authors, and actors to use a pseudonym.

(While true for actors -- which Gannon/Guckert essentially was, pretending to be a legitimate member of the White House press corps -- Guckert's statement about "journalists" seems to be inaccurate; Dana Milbank, a reporter for The Washington Post, told MSNBC's Chris Matthews on Thursday night that he wasn't aware of even a single journalist whose real name was unknown by his peers. Nor did Milbank name any journalists who use pseudonyms in any capacity or context. On Keith Olbermann's MSNBC program on Friday night, Milbank said that Guckert "keeps saying things which turn out not to be true," and that the first time he met Guckert the man was wearing a press pass which said "GOPUSA." Milbank noted that he couldn't understand Guckert's inability to recall when his first article was published by GOPUSA -- an unforgettable event, Milbank implied, in the career of any real journalist).

I saw an interview with him where he was showing off his condo. I knew he was gay all along so that was no surprise (that certainly wouldn't stop me from thinking someone was hot), but having a GI-NORMOUS photo of his mom hanging over his bed sorta killed any attraction I had. Even if your mom IS Gloria Vanderbilt, that's just kweepy.

Very good questions being lobbed to Gannuckert. The answers were not good enough. Funny. I expected a hardass attitude from Jeffames. Instead, he seemed scared and was formulating his answers very carefully. I guess he has a reason to be. Bringing this kind of attention to the regime may get him disappeared.

79. I don't trust Mr. Cooper...
In my opinion, another game of "limited hangout"...

Why did Rove decide to allow Gannon to talk to Cooper?

Because Cooper probably agreed to play by some "rules"....

Y'know...no hooker stuff, no pressing on just WHO was Gannon's contact in the White House, nothing on the dirty tricks campaign in S. Dakota...

I don't trust ANYONE on that network since their "re-organization" after Bush stole the White House in 2000 and before 9-11. It still amazes me how quickly Isaacson bent over for the GOP and had the Neo-Con slant ready to help promote the Big Lie.

In my opinion, the "Central" News Network is THE main propaganda organ of the Military Industrial Elite, not Faux. Precisely because they have to be more subtle and crafty, it's far more effective.

Just the way I see it.

82. The Limited Hangout - Psy Op strategy of deception...
Council on Foreign Relations members in the intelligence community and the media use a psychological strategy called a "limited hangout." A "limited hangout" is used by Intelligence Organization's when a clandestine operation goes bad; or, a phoney cover story blows up. When discovered the Intelligence Organization volunteers some of the truth while still managing to withhold key and damaging facts in the case.

The public is so intrigued by the new information it doesn't pursue the matter further. The new disclosures are sensational, but superficially so. Some of the lesser scoundrels are identified and publicly exposed to twist uncomfortably on network TV and in the press.

I don't know why but I even expected that.

My only disappointment was letting Gannon get away with "private life" and "mistakes in the past". Active porn sites on the web offering illegal services during the time he was playing reporter are neither private nor past. That would have been quick and easy to point out.

I keep wondering with discovery of illegal activities why he wouldn't be legally busted, the computers and records all confiscated.

91. I was pleasantly surprised by Cooper...
... he managed to score some good points, before softening up a little towards the end. Overall, it wasn't bad for the typical CNN puff piece. It's "Corporate Media" coverage, so let's celebrate a little. However, my eyes rolled to the back of my head when Cooper threw to Howie (apologist) Kurtz at the beginning of the segment...

KURTZ: ...Gannon has become a symbol for the president's critics, and for the bloggers who have shown once again they can take people down with warp speed.

Yeah... shoot the messenger, Howie, you hack. What about the story?

Why is Guckert still making media appearances? I thought that GOP lawyers would have clamped down on him. While Guckert did appear nervous (and rightfully so, even on a friendly network like CNN), the biggest impression I got from this appearance is that he's not very bright. Seriously. He strikes me as being quite stupid. Maybe all the blood rushing to the 8" (cut) part of his body is depriving his brain. Yeah, that was a cheap shot, but then apparently so is Guckert.

COOPER: There are those who have said that the reason perhaps you are using a different name is that there is stuff from your past that you did not want people to know about or find out about.

GANNON: How I'll address that is that I have made mistakes in my past...

"How I'll address that"? Guess who has been speaking to lawyers. However, since he continued to burble on and even state that no-one in the WH knew about his past {that one will leave a mark}, he is too dumb to know when to STFU.

This was my favourite part:

GANNON: ...the effect of this has been that we seem to have established a new standard for journalists in this country, where if someone disagrees with you, then your personal life, your private life, and anything you have ever done in the past is going to be brought up for public inspection.

This was the point where the irony overtook me and I had to leave the room: Guckert used the phrase "established a new standard for journalists" about the {evil} bloggers, not himself, without even a hint of irony. I don't think he gets irony at all: he probably thinks it's "like silvery or bronzy, only made of iron" {/Baldrick}

brought up for public inspection." As opposed to what Jeffames did, lie, distort and smear.

105. sorry, here's snip from Cooper's show transcript
COOPER: There are many questions that have been raised about whether or not -- people raising the specter that you are somehow a White House plant. Are you a White House plant? Were you (UNINTELLIGIBLE)?

GANNON: Absolutely not. As a matter of fact, how I came to be at the White House is I asked to attend a briefing. I asked the White House press office. They gave me a daily pass to get in.

COOPER: When was that?

GANNON: I don't recall, but it was -- I think somewhere in the neighborhood of two years ago.

COOPER: Because in -- was that for Talon News?

GANNON: At the time, it was called something else, but it -- the name was changed to Talon News shortly thereafter.

COOPER: What was it called at the time?

GANNON: It was called GOPUSA.

COOPER: So -- and that's owned by a Republican activist, Bobby Eberle?

GANNON: It's owned by Bobby Eberle. COOPER: The first record we have now of you actually being at a White House press briefing was on February 28th, 2003, as you said, before Talon News even existed. So why were you given a White House pass?

GANNON: I was given a White House -- well, you will have to ask the White House that. But I asked to attend the White House briefing because I was -- you know, because I wanted to report on the activities there.

COOPER: But GOPUSA is not a news organization.

GANNON: Well, we were -- we were -- we had established a news division, and it was later renamed Talon News.

133. And the answer from the Scotty over at the WH...
I haven't asked him, but I'm not going to ask him, either, so please accept this non-denial denial as though it were something I had actually looked into--and don't ever again ask me about who knows Eberle and who doesn't.

I know this is about Eberle, but it is a strange statement.

99. Cooper is very like Olbermann.. He has that boyish charm, and
yet the intellect always shines through..

He was raised in "super wealth" and could have been a lazy playboy, yet he went UNAFILIATED with any news organization..to Bosnia and Yugoslavia during the war because he wanted to be a serious journalist..

He kept submitting pictures and stories until he was finally offered an intro into the real journalistic world.

I don't know too many super rich guys who would never have to work a day in their lives, who would do that:)

106. Let us see how "serious" Mr. Cooper remains...
I predict a Larry King-like future...

But then, I'm a cynical bastard.

Just don't fall for the patrician good manners and the fake, pinched look of concern he always flashes when "going to the latest story"...

Trust?

Not as far as I can throw him, SoCalDem, and I respect you alot. And I don't mean to be a buzz killer here.

But there have been moments in the past when I've been watching and he lights up my CIA-dar like a pinball game...

and who knows, maybe the corporate media folks are starting to feel the nipping at their heels..

ABC/NBC/CBS had their stature diminished when cable came along, and may cable is next on the food chain:)

137. The whole interview was scripted/choreographed/vetted by the WH
Edited on Sat Feb-19-05 03:01 AM by ultraist
That's why it wasn't live. It had to be vetted and edited.

There is no way they have cut Gannon loose. They are telling him what interviews he can do and what to say. They needed him to go on and deny any WH wrongdoing. Gannon is scared and not of the liberal bloggers. His bottom lip started to quiver at one point. He does not want to fuck it up. I wouldn't want a WH admin that tortures and commits mass murder pissed off at me. He likely stepped over the line with his reckless question about 'divorced from reality Dems.' Why did Gannon blow his cover at that point? Was it mistake or was he looking to become more public?

AC did a good job appearing as the hard ass but did he ask anything we didn't already know or nail him to the wall on anything except when Gannon wrote his first story?

I don't trust the MSM and I don't trust the WH. They have this guy under tight control. Let's not forget Rove et al are extremely powerful.

Edited on Sat Feb-19-05 10:39 AM by Kahuna
I don't see why Cooper is praise worthy. IMHO, he played along with the typical the repuke modis operandi. And notice that last night Kurtz did an "unbiased" introduction, while today he is back to whoring and has painted his piece as, "admit the sin, and move on."

139. Was SAME-SEX escort even mentioned?
They kept saying 'escort' and it was unclear as to whether he was a chippendale for ladies or a gay hustler. The only reason why I think this is important is because of his virulent anti-gay stance.

It seemed like Anderson was forced to pussyfoot around this reality.

142. Welcome Aboard !
Anderson and Lou Dobbs are about the only ones who are worth watching on CNN anymore.

Wolf blitzer is an asshole. He only reports what the bushtapo tells him to. He is bright enough to realize that the world has changed, and that his career is advanced with every bush loving vowel he sputters. The same goes for his little apprentice Aaron Brown.

In my opinion, "reporters" like these actually drag the whole news profession through the mud.

148. Missing question
WHO approved his access to the WH?

There seems to be an unwillingness to move the blame up the ladder here. Guckert-Gannon had one thing right, he isn't the one to blame for being allowed access.

Maybe it's on the cutting room floor.

150. i was presently surprised by Anderson too.
He did a good job with that interview. I wonder what was cut, and why tho?

maybe he did ask the questions about his profession and public figure status and whatnot, but gannong fell to pieces, or the editor didn't want to use the material or something.

for a preliminary foray into real live journalism from the Corporate media, i give Anderson the benefit of the doubt. he did good.
