Would another terror attack "justify" the draft to Americans?
I'm starting to get paranoid that there will be another LIHOP/MIHOP incident, and it will be just the ticket to get Americans to accept that we "need" a draft.

What do you guys think?

My apologies if someone has already thought of this and posted it before.

1. To lots of them, yeah. But lots of them already think it's justified...
of course, those who wouldn't "qualify" for the draft.

OTOH, my conservative dad said "no way" when I asked him if he'd support a draft. He said that's what it would take for him to stop supporting * and his friends.

2. I've been speculating about the same thing
IF they're going to attack Iran, they CANNOT do it without a draft.

There is NO WAY that a draft will fly without another attack.

Ergo...

The only way they can attack Iran is if there is another attack.

5. Great minds.....
I was thinking exactly the same thing this morning.

We know they want to attack Iran, but it's just logistically impossible with the military committments we already have.

Americans don't want a draft....they know this.

What made people line up to enlist? Pearl Harbor.

I'm starting to get really nervous.

It'll be something really, really big. And it'll have a neon sign blinking "IRAN DID THIS" on it. And most people won't look any further.

God help us.

3. Another terror attack would justify martial law, and God knows what else.
Look how far we've come with 9/11.

4. Justify the draft, and that would just be the beginning.
Another like 9/11 and Bush will take the powers of the fascist military duce.

6. If a draft was implemented it would be interesting...

Who gets a deferment? There has been enough recent comment (Colin Powell's Statement that the deferment irregularities and preferential treatment shown in the Vietnam era were just about the best way to discourage compliance and respect)for example. In the modern media world the draft issue would catch fire faster and burn much hotter as an issue. This is not a country full of Depression era, hardened, farm and manufacturing workers. Many Americans can hardly do anything useful in a real practical sense. Welcome to Rome. Goodbye old pal!

7. We can do another war without a draft...
...but it would have to be an intensive air war at first, ala the 'softening up' preceding the first gulf war. That would give us time to mobilize and reinforce the men on the ground in Iraq to move into Iran.

Would the Iranians give us time to do this? Hard to say. Keep in mind that if we're at war with Iran and our troops in Iraq are seriously in danger of being overrun, we got submarine based nukes.

Don't think we wouldn't use them.

8. Your proposal scares me as well.
If we used nukes on Iran, it would be this world over.

There's no way Russia and China would put up with us nuking someone that close to them.

:scared:

9. Whoa, there, possum. It ain't MY proposal.
It's not even my prediction, although I certainly think war with Iran is in the offing. Too many variables in play.

And I don't think China or Russia will nuke us if we use nukes, they'll just sit back and watch the rest of the world make us economic and political pariahs.

10. Apologies. Sloppy writing on my part.
I never actually thought it was your proposal, either.
I should have said, "The hypothetical scenario you raise scares me."

I hope you are right about China and Russia. I hope that they would use restraint. More restraint than we apparently have.
:-(

11. They didn't need it in Vietnam. I think just another Gulf of T
would suffice.
