The bill working it's way through Congress right now, which still is not a guarantee for passage, resembles a bill passed by the Nevada legislature, I believe in 1999. Like the bill in Congress, the Nevada bill relied a great deal on private insurance companies to provide prescription drug coverage for seniors who could not afford it. There was much fanfare after the bill passed and Republican Governor Kenny Guinn patted himself on the back. Problem is only one insurance company signed up, and they were initially not even eligible to participate until the rules were adjusted. I never heard much about what happened to the bill after that, but I'm pretty sure that the bill was widely recognized throughout Nevada to be a failure (I invite Nevada DUers to share any addtional information). The situation in Nevada is something we should be aware of as this bill works it's way through Congress.
