Actor and celebrity golfer Bill Murray will donate $12,500 in tournament winnings to the endangered Salinas library system, thrilling library supporters and calling national attention to the system's last-ditch fund-raising drive.

The city's three libraries are slated to close entirely by April, unless the drive to raise $500,000 succeeds. The money would allow the libraries to remain open one day per week through December, the bare minimum of time needed to place a permanent funding measure on a special election ballot.
