i've got this old sci-fi movie called "Dune"... it's a pretty cheesey movie but it's got an interesting plot... reminds me of the war in iraq, if you have the patience to listen to this audio clip check it out..

this is a clip of the lady talking about the basic plot of the movie, the name of this planet is "IRAQis" or something...

here's the clip: (if your in a hurry jump to about 1:00)

12. LOL
that's probably the first time i've heard this movie described as great.

i love it, but let's face it: it's a cheezy 80's scifi movie.

the book, on teh other hand...is one of the great epics of our time.

5. I hated that movie, but it did have some interesting aspects
STING looking oiled up, and hunky, yet almost anorexic.

The big fat guy with pus leaking from his face, his swollen body and UGLY ass feet flying around demanding SPICE...

Kyle Mc (whatever the hell his name is...the Blue Velvet guy) has he been in some weird movies or what?

David Lynch - How would you like to take a peek inside this guy's head?

8. Its a good movie for an adaptation from the book.
It would half to be done in 2 or 3 parts like Lord of the Rings.

13. the tv short series did a fair job with it.
yet wasn't as appealing...bc they didn't do it with any vision, and just tried to match it to the book. i honestly think the 80's version was better just bc they actually tried something with it, something interesting...instead of just filming the book.

9. I loved that movie
It's a cult treat for me. Also the hero's secret name "Mosul" sounds like a town in Iraq.

14. "here's the proof"... 'IRAQis"... ?...
... what truly bizzare and naïve claims. Or not. If you have only watched David Lynch's movie "Dune" and not read any of the Frank Herbert "Dune" books on which it was based, then it's no wonder that you have this opinion. Or did you put forth this opinion for some other reason, perhaps?

Playing along with your charade due to ennui, your point about the "Dune" story reminding one of the Iraqi war is a good one, but I suspect not for the reasons you think. In Herbert's books, the Atreides family represented classic liberal ideals. They developed a loyal fighting force due to strong morals and good treatment. Their superiority over the Imperial Sardaukar force was due to this training, not to some sonic über-weapon as portrayed in Lynch's "old" and "cheesy" movie.

The Atreides family also allied with the indigenous Freman people of the desert planet Arrakis, in defense against the ruthless, perverse, torturing, power-hungry, invading, imperialistic Harkonnen forces who wished only to control the Oil {oops, I mean Spice}. Interestingly, Herbert used a lot of Middle-Eastern/European terms in his novels (e.g., jihad, pogrom), and not just in the vocabulary of the "evil-doers".

I agree that the Dune novels do present an interesting allegory to the current U.S. administration and Iraq, except I cast the administration as the Harkonnens. I don't think that you do.

On that note, I end my contribution to what I consider to be a meaningless, trolling post. Thanks for the opportunity to try and score some points against you. Shouldn't you and your colleagues be posting some other diversionary topics? So, just what are you trying to distract us from?

By the way, either your Shift key is broken
or you
don't realise that

17. You know, I never thought of Israel as The Emperor...
... and I still don't. One can take an allegory too far, you know?

Fuck, I don't know what inspired Herbert to create the universe that he did and whether he was making some contemporary geopolitical statement (oh, so long ago). In his novels, Herbert also wrote about psychic powers, religion, tribalism, technology, capitalism, environmentalism and probably a whole bunch of other "isms" that I didn't mention.

Please don't mistake me for a Herbert fan-boy or an anti-Semite. If you want an argument, go elsewhere. I was only posting some thoughts as a counter to the (IMO) truly assinine original post.

If you want to play along with the allegory and kick this POS thread some more: Leo Strauss is the Emperor... discuss.

23. Why is it taking it too far?
The Emperor used the Harkonnens for his own benefit, and many think the Israelis are using the neocons for their own benefits.

This seemed like it could have been a fun thread, if you don't like it, leave it.

And no, I am not going to get into a further discussion with you.

16. The Spice Must Flow
I read the books a long time ago, and was somewhat impressed with Lynch's take on it. Yes, there are a lot of parallels. I'd suggest reading the the 1st two books.

So regionally there is a significant connection.
