Officials air interrogations of insurgents

IRAQ:Police in Mosul hope the tapes can turn public sentiment against the fighters and make them seem weak.

BY CHRISTINE HAUSER

NEW YORK TIMES

MOSUL, Iraq - In one scene, the videotape shows three kidnappers with guns and a knife, preparing to behead a helpless man who is gagged and kneeling at their feet.

In the next, it is one of the kidnappers who is in detention, his eyes wide with fear, his lips trembling, as he speaks to his interrogators.

"How do I say this?" says the kidnapper, identified as an Egyptian named Abdel-Qadir Mahmoud, holding back tears. "I am sorry for everything I have done."

1. Anybody else read the WSJ or USA Today article
about Iraqi's turned Vigilantes??? A group of Iraqi men stopped a car that had a group of insurgents in it. They shot and killed 5 of the 8. The other 3 were captured and the car blown up. Al Jazeera showed the video a couple times. It was titled "Iraqi's Finally starting to Fight back!"

2. How long...
...before a vigilante group of Shia mistakenly kill a carload of Sunni and spark off a conflict? A month, more, less? Because if allowed to continue, it WILL happen. Imagine if vigilantism were permitted in the US? Oh, wait, I think we already did that, it was called lynching.
