1. It's worth the 10 bucks ...
It isn't The Nation, Mother Jones, or Harpers, but it's pretty decent. It runs 4 pages and usually has about 8-12 short articles. If you only have 10 bucks to spend, I'd recommend MoJo instead, but if you want to spread some moolah around, you could do worse.

3. I get The Nation, but
I don't really like it as much as I thought I would.

I want a more "hard-core" bias like

fuck bush kinda way

2. I like it...
As a fellow Austinite, I feel a kindred connection to the progressive champion, Jim Hightower... his articles are simple, concise, free from ads, and full of his Texan wit.

4. Yes I get it and I read it instantly. The side columns are the same that
appear in the "Progressive Populist" newspaper, so those are a repeat. But the main articles are ones that don't seem to appear anywhere else. If for no other reason, I suggest to people to subscribe to the Hightower Lowdown as a way of supporting Jim Hightower because I think he is one of the best 'colyumnists' that the progressives have. He has a way of expressing the things he is talking about that is both entertaining, maddening and inspiring.

5. It helps me maintain some connection to sanity,
not easy for a progressive dem in the hoosier state. I've also been reading Mo Jo, Progressive, and Washington Spectator, another newsletter. And then there's Funny Times--sometimes I need to laugh to keep from crying. It also runs some of Jim Hightower's columns, but the Lowdown is packed with much more info.

OTOH, I grew up reading the Indpls Star & News and it made me a librul, much to my parents' chagrin!

9. For $12, you can get The Progressive for a year -- just to confuse you

more! Check out

http://www.progressive.org/default.htm

and you can sample a lot of articles, get on their free e-mail list, etc. It's like choosing ice cream, opinions will differ on the best!

Hightower's good and I'd love to own all his books. But I like to bring The Progressive to people's attention because they're good, they're not as well-known as Mother Jones, they've been around since 1907 or so.
