Alan Keyes kicks daughter out of house (for being gay & not conservative)
Edited on Fri Feb-04-05 05:35 PM by wicket
This makes me SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO mad!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Here is his daughter's blog:

http://www.xanga.com/item.aspx?user=Xmisled0youthX&tab=weblogs&uid=196061776

"Well, it's happened. Finally and officially.

A couple days ago I got my official two-week warning that I have to be out of this apartment; so finally for real I'm getting cut off. I got no severance or anything like that from my sudden termination of employment (don't I have freedom of speech? the right to protest Bush without losing my job? Hehe... most people would think that working under a parent would be security but for me it's quite the opposite.) and so I definitely don't have anywhere near enough cash to find a new apartment; not even one room rented from someone anywhere. I've been searching craigslist but even places where I'd have enough to pay the first month's rent on some room I never have enough for the deposit as well, so so far I've had no luck at all finding a new home, since shelter requires money. Sad boo."

Saw this at Oliver Willis' blog: http://www.oliverwillis.com/node/view/1822

who would throw a minor child out of the house for being gay should face criminal charges and be put in jail.

having said that, I think Keyes's daughter is over 18, so while this is vile, immoral and repugnant, it is not criminal.

It's like throwing her out for being left handed. Or blue eyed.

Of course, i wouldn't throw away a relationship with a relative if they disagreed with me politically either. Unless they were actively trying to mess with me or my family.

I have, however, seen situations where DUers cut themselves off from support by family members because of political beliefs (usually due to harassment and such).

I have never in my time here seen any DUer kick a family member out on the street.

If you have proof...show it.

Not remaining friends with someone who's gone over to the "darkside" is nothing like what Keyes has apparently done.

I rest my case. You made an unsubstanciated claim several posts up on this thread, the link proves nothing other than some personal conflicts (none of which included an evicting and firing as far as I can see), and the game is over.

68. Give it a rest.
ere's what you said that started all of this:

18. I'm going to get flamed for this one.

I can't see where too many of you folks have any room to talk. I've seen WAY too many threads where some of you cut off family members over political beliefs. How is that any different than Keyes cutting off his daughter for idealogical beliefs?

Flame away, my skin is thick and I can take it!

How is it different? I saw NO evictions, no firings, and other than the thread that you linked, which was started by a person that was verbally attacked by r-winger family members during a holiday, I fail to see that your original post makes much sense.

Then you made an additional claim off of my reply, you said:

40. I just did right above here.

Apologies will be accepted.

To my:

38. I've NEVER seen someone here evict a FAMILY member.

Prove it or STFU.

Oh and some post by one guy with 3 posts claiming to be a Liberal Atheist cat killer doesn't count.

No, no, no, and no again, you did NOT see that anywhere on DU or the thread you linked.

Sorry if you miss-typed your reply but I'm not the one making up or changing rules of engagement. It's make a comment, get a reply, wash rinse repeat.

You claim that you've seen, "WAY too many threads where some of you cut off family members over political beliefs.", you posted one week old thread where some people expressed frustration with conservative family members. You continue with, "How is that any different than Keyes cutting off his daughter for idealogical beliefs?", I explained the difference, you can't seem to accept it.

It's not my fault if you make a claim that you couldn't back up.

23. More on Maya Keyes: She needs a job and a home. Anyone help?
Ms. Keyes will also be marching with EqualityMaryland on Monday, February 14th:

4:45 p.m. - 5:00 p.m.

March to Lawyer’s Mall (in front of the State House) for the rally, featuring community leaders, Judy Shepard, and Maya Marcel Keyes, the self-described queer activist who is also daughter of ultra-conservative Alan Keyes, whose recent campaign for senator from Illinois included his calling Mary Cheney a “hedonist.” Maya group up in Montgomery County and will certainly have some interesting things to say about living with someone who is so outspoken in his opposition to gay rights.

Also, there was a past article on Maya Keyes a while back that talked about her postings on Yahoo! as well.

27. He fired her for being gay? That is discrimination, she should sue
I'm not that concerned that a college graduate was kicked out of their parents home. She is an adult with a good education. But if he fired her from her job because she is gay, that is illegal.

I love my children unconditionally and wouldn't dream of cutting ANYONE off because they were gay. I though Jesus said, 'love the sinner, hate the sin.'

I hate that phrase.

It's a thinly-veiled pathetic attempt at disguising bigotry.

"hate the sin". Give me a F'ing break.

I don't even think Jesus said that.

Actually, the bible clearly states that we should hate both.

36. I agree, but that is the Bible quote they rely on to cloak their bigotry
My point was that IF he is relying on Bible quotes to make his decision, he didn't read that particular one, the one taht happens to be used against gays frequently.

I think it's an abuse of religion to use Bible quotes to justify hate and violence. The fact is, statements like that promote hate and violence whether they are cloaked in a Bible quote or not.

Because homosexuals in many instances are not one of the protected classes where termination because of that class status is against the law.

there are very few protections for gay citizens in employment, unless the company itself institutes a non-discrimination policy which includes the phrase "sexual orientation." Otherwise... no recourse through normal channels.

32. This will probably be the best thing that ever happened to her
It will be tough, but she's obviously a tough girl if she can grow up to be an intelligent wonderful open-minded person IN SPITE of her fucking moronic asshole of a father. Getting away from his poison will allow her to really blossom.

Good luck Maya!

80. must never have happened to you, then
It can be a soul-destroying experience, too. This kind of thing can and does actually drive people away from what made them "good people" in the first place. Aside from that, there's the ancillary financial and psychological recovery, which can each take years themselves.

Believe me; I know this all too well. It's been a little over a decade for me, and it still feels like it happened only yesterday.

90. That's where you're wrong
My parents were sick of kids by the time I was born (youngest of 11) and couldn't wait to be rid of me. I would've loved to have supportive parents who eased me into adulthood, but I didn't. And it sucked for sure. But I'm very independent and capable now, a better person for the years of hardship despite some of the emotional scars.

Especially since she's in what can only be described as an abusive household, it's better for her to be away from there. Let's face it, her dad is mentally ill. And if her mom is allowing him to continue to unleash his bile on his family (and the whole country), then she's an enabler at best or mentally ill herself at worst.

and useful to a healthy human being. I'm not at all sure this rascal qualifies for either of those appellations.

89. No worries!
I just find it so...disgusting that the very same people who would use Kerry's "we are all children of God" against him will treat their own children so poorly.

64. Could be the best thing for her...
She's so obviously opposed to everything her father stands for, it must have **sucked** to be dependent on him.

She sounds smart and energetic -- she has lots of friends -- I'm sure she'll do fine on her own.

78. Keyes slams Cheney daughter

Keyes slams Cheney daughter

New York, NY, Sep. 1 (UPI) -- Illinois Republican U.S. Senate hopeful Alan Keyes reportedly had tough words for vice presidential daughter Mary Cheney because she is a lesbian. In an interview with SIRUS satellite radio, the Internet's Drudge Report said Wednesday, Keyes called Mary Cheney "a 'selfish hedonist' because she is a lesbian."

Keyes said: "The essence of ... family life remains procreation. If we embrace homosexuality as a proper basis for marriage, we are saying that it's possible to have a marriage state that in principal excludes procreation and is based simply on the premise of selfish hedonism." Asked whether that meant Mary Cheney "is a selfish hedonist," Keyes said: "That goes by definition. Of course she is."

Keyes took to the airwaves again Wednesday to try and put the remark in context. WBBM-AM, Chicago, reported he denied the comment was meant to slam Mary Cheney and blamed the media for taking a generalization and making it personal. Keyes said if he had a lesbian daughter he would love her but tell her she was sinning.

It's uncanny how much she resembles her old man in that photo.

That's the crazy, wacky world of genetics!
