have access to DU groups
make a poll
and other things

1. well, it costs money to keep the site up and running
making a donation isn't neccessary to be a participating member on DU...it's not like you have to access all the groups or make a poll, etc. But if you want to, then why not help for some of the costs?

3. If I can afford a small donation every year, anybody can.
The guys with signs on street corners in Tucson make a lot more than I do.

Think of it as a civic responsibility. This is our little community and we all do what we can to pay for what we use communally. Wouldn't it be great if America worked that way again? ;)

I don't know, but I would guess it helps to keep the riffraff out. You can donate to DU anytime but they do have fundraisers quarterly. During these fundraisers many members sponsor those that may not be able to afford to donate. Stick around I think you could be pleasantly surprised with this place.

And if you really cannot afford it, say so and someone may sponsor you. I've sponsored a few people and trust me when I say I'm not rich.
