Super Bowl Crapola Infects My Daughter's 2nd-Grade Class
Edited on Wed Feb-02-05 09:05 PM by stopbush
I'm helping my daughter with her homework tonight, and we get to a "special" page:

Who Do You Think Will Win The SuperBowl? The Eagles or the Patriots. Please pick a team and give your reason for picking them, even if the reason is "I guessed"

Our answer was: Eagles

Our reason: We guessed. We don't watch football at our house.

5. We couldn't vote for the Patriots because we didn't know what city
they play in. Hell, it might be Kennebunkport. New England is awfully big.

Besides, it's only football. It's not like there's a special on milk at the supermarket...

2. Indoctrination
Making sure she'll knuckle under and be a good consumer when she grows up...
I'm not even bothering to watch the Super Bowl. Got some painting to do.

3. Yes that is so much more important than the fact that we have the biggest
crooks ever in charge of his country. And that day by day they are dismantling your centuries old civil rights, destroying the earth, and limiting your access to fair wages and health care. What the hell though there is football on.

4. The Eagles...
are definitely the populist choice. Underdogs, scrappy, working-class town, inspiring black QB...

8. I could see it if they did it for every other sporting event that occurs
during her school year - The US Open, The World Series, etc. But, no, they ask the question in reference to the most-militaristic, violent "national sport" we've got.

Maybe post-contest they'll ask what SB commercials were the best, or whose tit looked the best during the halftime show...

9. Actually as I teacher
I think the reason was to do something to involve the whole family and help your daughter develop critical thinking skills. So in choosing a team, the teacher was probably hoping for you and your daughter to list reasons why you would choose whomever to win. I don't think there was anything bad or corrupt about the assignment; just something to fun to do. Anyhow, if I had my class to do that, that would have been my reasoning.
