Officer Threatens To Arrest Woman For Anti-Bush Sticker
>snip POSTED: 1:42 pm EST January 25, 2005

DENVER -- A police sergeant is being investigated for allegedly threatening a woman with arrest for displaying a profane President Bush bumper sticker.

The "F--- Bush" bumper sticker on 26-year-old Shasta Bates' pickup truck offended a shopping center patron who saw it Monday on Bates' parked vehicle and flagged down Sgt. Michael Karasek, who was patrolling the area.

1. Obviously, Sgt. Caringsek has not heard of the First Amendment.
It's a shame a beautiful state like Colorado has such mean, narrow-minded, and bigoted people.

9. That may be the key to victory
The way I see it, many Republican girls don't get enough in the sack and they resent it when they are reminded of that fact. I suggest that the Democrats bed as many of them as possible and they will turn to progressive politics as a by-product. Afterall, their dickless, Viagra popping men can't seem to do the job. (Why do you think they're so interested in the weapons of war? It's a substitute for all their inadequacies).

16. No, it doesn't. The Supreme Court already ruled that obscenities are not
protected by the first amendement.

"What the Miller test outlines is the outer most limits on banning sexual speech. Thus, nearly all legislation at the both state and federal level, simply copies the Miller test into its language since substitution of even a single word can result in the law being held unconstitutional. The result is that application of the Miller test – what "prurient", "patently offensive", or having "social, artistic or scientific value" is, and what the local standard are for such decisions - rests squarely in the hands of the juries of each state. In the end, the Court concluded that this decision was one that must be made by each state, not the Supreme Court."

3. police are now punishing people for criticizing Shrub....
It's becoming like hell. If she wants to put a bumper sticker that says "FUCK BUSH" then it is her right under the Constitution to put it there.
This only demonstrates the government's lack of respect for both people's views and the Constitution.

5. In a related story...
Police Officer Congratulates Local Woman for Displaying "F--- Clinton" Bumper Sticker.

According to witnesses, a passerby flagged down the officer after taking offense to a sticker on the back of a 2005 H2. The officer told the hippie that "this is America and people can have whatever stickers they want on their beautiful luxury vehicles." He then told the treehugger to, "get lost before I haul your ass off the pokey for illegal possession."

Witnesses cheered the officer in victory as the pinko-communist-liberal ram off like a little girl.

The owner of the H2 said she placed the sticker on her car because she was in "total agreement with all of Bush's policies" and that Clinton was "a total pig." When questioned as to which Clinton her bumper sticker was lampooning, the woman responded that they were all "just awful" and it was a general statement towards the whole "rotten family."

7. You are aware, of course,
Edited on Sat Jan-29-05 11:36 AM by notsodumbhillbilly
that www.whitehousememos.com is not a government web site aren't you? Bush lied, thousands died. Your post said "in a related story" as if this was a factual report. Have you actually been to the website? If not, please do. It's a hilarious satire on the Bush cabal. Anyone who would take something from this site seriously would be extremely dense - right wing cultists for example.

10. You are aware of course
that I was writing satire. No one actually had the F--- Clinton bumper sticker, it was a joke. Kind of in the vein of whitehousememos.com I thought.

to a newbie that you not start threads "In a related story" when posting on a thread about factual reports. Welcome to DU. You'll learn a great deal here.

18. why not just
have a sense of humor and realize that no news article would actually refer to someone as a hippy or a treehugger or a pinko-communist-liberal? Sorry man, but I think it was pretty self-explanatory. Do you get this picky with the whitehousememos?

23. I suggest sarcasm and satire tags
Humor-impairment is a common ailment at DU these days. Many of us have had our hilarity meters blown out by current reality and, rather than seeing the comedic intent of posts such as yours, are likely to suspect snark or gloating.

Especially when writing original material that lampoons actual events, it's worth your time to put in </satire> or </sarcasm> to let folks know where you're coming from.

12. The important thing to notice about this article is
"A police sergeant is being investigated for allegedly threatening a woman with arrest for displaying a profane President Bush bumper sticker."

I do not agree with the sarg's threats, and it would appear that the PD doesn't either, since they are investigating him. The woman was not arrested and this appears to be an individual abusing his powers.

I wonder if anything will come of the investigation.

13. I'm a member of ACLU
and I LOATHE that CREEP, along with his minders and camp-followers. And, having gone to sea for over a half century, I've heard and spoken FAR worse. But it's quite possible that the cop took prudish exception to the public display of the word "Fuck", rather than the anti-Bush sentiment.

I'm not speaking in favor of such "anti-obscenity" heavy-handedness, but this might shift the discourse in a different direction.
